Films 201511

November was een lastige maand. Ik zweefde van de ene migraine naar de andere, en eigenlijk loop ik constant met een aanhoudende hoofdpijn. Ik steek het op het rotweer –het wil maar niet koud worden, al heb ondertussen ook wel griep gekregen. Er was geen tijd (goesting/mogelijkheid) om de films dagelijks bij te houden, maar hierbij toch het lijstje voor november.

  1. No Escape / John Erick Dowdle / 2015 / ***
    In their new overseas home, an American family soon finds themselves caught in the middle of a coup, and they frantically look for a safe escape from an environment where foreigners are being immediately executed.
    Lake Bell en Owen Wilson zijn comedy acteurs, en Pierce Brosnan is een ex-Bond acteur die graag ABBA zingt. John Erick Dowdle maakte het niet meteen desastreuze As Above, So Below, en een paar jaar eerder het wel erg op [REC] gelijkende Quarantine. Niet meteen een veelbelovende cast, maar deze film is veel beter dan die premisse. No Escape is een organische, spannende film, met.. durf ik het te stellen: een ‘realistischer’ benadering dan zijn soortgenoten. Best de moeite van het bekijken waard (drie sterren houdt in dat ik de film nog wel eens zou willen herbekijken).
  2. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation / Christopher McQuarrie / 2015 / **(*)
    Ethan and team take on their most impossible mission yet, eradicating the Syndicate – an International rogue organization as highly skilled as they are, committed to destroying the IMF.
    De gebruikelijke ingrediënten in deze franchise, een beetje te voor de hand liggend misschien. De vierde langspeelfilm van McQuarrie, die tegen 2017 de volgende episode ook mag afleveren.
  3. 400 Days / Matt Osterman / 2015 / *
    “400 Days” centers on four astronauts sent on a simulated mission to a distant planet to test the psychological effects of deep space travel. Locked away for 400 days, the crew’s mental state begins to deteriorate when they lose all communication with the outside world. Forced to exit the ship, they discover that this mission may not have been a simulation after all.
    Nope. Psychologische moeilijkdoenerij.
  4. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. / Guy Ritchie / 2015 / ***
    In the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons.
    Bij Napoleon moet ik altijd aan Merlina denken, maar dit geheel terzijde. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is een lichte, verfrissende en bijna pretentieloze film, die hopelijk niet te snel met een sequel om zeep wordt geholpen.

    Ontspanning voor het ganse gezin.
  6. Avengers: Age of Ultron / Joss Whedon / 2015 / ***
    When Tony Stark and Bruce Banner try to jump-start a dormant peacekeeping program called Ultron, things go horribly wrong and it’s up to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plans.
    Wachten, wachten, wachten, tot we mee waren met Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. En het was de moeite waard –toch voor wie mee is met het Marvel universum.
  7. No Strings Attached / Ivan Reitman / 2011 / *(*)
    A guy and girl try to keep their relationship strictly physical, but it’s not long before they learn that they want something more.
    Uitgekomen in hetzelfde jaar (maar eerder dan) het thematisch heel erg gelijkende, maar inhoudelijk superieure Friends With Benefits. Natalie Portman is eerder miscast in deze rol –geef haar maar V For Vendetta.
  8. Spectre / Sam Mendes

    A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.
    Het is zeker niet de beste Bond, vergeleken met de drie voorgaande, maar toch beslist de moeite waard om te gaan bekijken.
  9. Curve / Iain Softley / 2015 / *(*)
    A young woman becomes trapped in her car after a hitchhiker causes her to have an automobile accident.
    Dit hoort thuis in de categorie ‘waarom niet’, maar bof, voel u niet verplicht. Julianne Hough doet haar best, maar dat blijkt niet helemaal voldoende.
  10. Paper Towns / Jake Schreier / 2015 / **
    After an all night adventure, Quentin’s life-long crush, Margo, disappears, leaving behind clues that Quentin and his friends follow on the journey of a lifetime.
    Het meest interessante aan deze film is het concept van de paper towns, en de arrogante kracht van het personage Margo (gespeeld door model & actrice Cara Delevingne). Het is zeker niet het beste boek van John Green; de plot is wat dunnetjes en veel meer ‘young’ dan ‘adult’.

    Kelly sneaks into her boyfriend’s house but tonight, she’s not the only unwelcome visitor. As the situation spirals out of control, the suburban house becomes a terrifying arena for violence.
    Tiger House is het langspeelfilm debuut van Tom Daley, en is zeker niet onverdienstelijk. Kaya Scodelario (van The Maze Runner), speelt Kelly, die als wildcard in een home invasion bij haar vriendje, terecht komt. Onterecht onder de vijf sterren gedoken bij IMDB.
  12. Landmine Goes Click / Levan Bakhia / 2015 / **
    Trapped standing on an armed landmine, an American tourist is forced to watch helplessly while his girlfriend is terrorized and brutally assaulted.
    Het begint weinig veelbelovend, maar de film bevat een dubbelle, lange introductie voor een weinig goeds voorspellend einde. Wat deze film mist is focus, maar is toch al een stap in de goede richting in vergelijking met het debuut van Bakhia, 247°F.

    In 1870s America, a peaceful American settler kills his family’s murderer which unleashes the fury of a notorious gang leader. His cowardly fellow townspeople then betray him, forcing him to hunt down the outlaws alone.
    Oooh… ik heb iets met westerns, begin ik te denken. Ik vroeger veel van dat soort films gezien, maar het is denk ik decennia geleden dat ik mij nog eens aan het genre heb gewaagd. Sterke vertolkingen van Mads Mikkelsen (en Eva Green).

    Honey, I Shrunk The Kids. Laat het ons houden op ontspannend.

    Twenty-four male students out of seventy-five were selected to take on randomly assigned roles of prisoners and guards in a mock prison situated in the basement of the Stanford psychology building.
    Een beetje langdradige uitleg over dat andere grote experiment (na Obedience To Authority), dat totaal uit de hand is gelopen.
  16. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl / Alfonso Gomez-Rejon / 2015 / **(*)
    High schooler Greg, who spends most of his time making parodies of classic movies with his co-worker Earl, finds his outlook forever altered after befriending a classmate who has just been diagnosed with cancer.
    Alle truken van de foor worden uitgehaald voor deze dramacom gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek van Jesse Andrews. Het is eens iets anders dan horror, moet regisseur Alfonso Gomez-Rejon gedacht hebben. Zeer bekijkbaar.

    After having escaped the Maze, the Gladers now face a new set of challenges on the open roads of a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles.
    Soms kijkt een mens gewoon omdat hij het eerste deel gezien heeft, en niet graag afhaakt. Ik ben een meeloper, ik.

    A young woman and her friends, who’ve been targeted by kidnappers, must do everything they can to survive after their limo is forced off the road and plunged into a canal.
    Ik ga eens doen alsof ik The Transporter (niet) ben, moet Jonathan Bennett gedacht hebben. Flauw.

    Maar allez: zo een twee ondergewaardeerde films. Ze sluiten thematisch en inhoudelijk perfect bij elkaar aan, als de eerste nog wel net iets beter dan de tweede. Zeer de moeite.

Jawel: het thema voor oktober was horror! Er zat veel brol tussen, maar toch ook een pak blijvers.

Om absoluut niet te missen: Slow West, Spring & Bone Tomahawk. Als u tijd over hebt, zijn er ook nog: The Final Girls, Experimenter & Shaun of the Dead.

    Once upon a time there were three neighboring kingdoms each with a magnificent castle, from which ruled kings and queens, princes and princesses. One king was a fornicating libertine, another captivated by a strange animal, while one of the queens was obsessed by her wish for a child. Sorcerers and fairies, fearsome monsters, ogres and old washerwomen, acrobats and courtesans are the protagonists of this loose interpretation of the celebrated tales of Giambattista Basile.
    Vooral te bekijken voor de wondermooie fotografie; verhaaltechnisch minder interessant.

    Alweer: mooie fotografie, saaie film.
  3. The Ipcress File / Sidney J. Furie / 1965 / ***
    In London, a counter espionage agent deals with his own bureaucracy while investigating the kidnapping and brainwashing of British scientists.
    Michael Caine doet van James Bond in deze film met fantastisch camerawerk.
  4. Le Mans / Lee H. Katzin / 1971 / ***
    Steve McQueen is ideally cast as a champion race car driver, participating in the famed 24-hour race headquartered in Le Mans, France. Though dedicated to Going for the Gold, McQueen finds time to romance widowed Elga Andersen. The dramatic angle to this plot wrinkle is that McQueen may well have been responsible for the death of Andersen’s husband during a previous car pile-up. Director John Sturges, who’d previously helmed Steve McQueen’s legendary motorcycle chase scenes in The Great Escape, was originally slated to direct Le Mans, but withdrew from the project; it was then taken over by Lee H. Katzin of The Phynx.
    Wat heb ik genoten van deze film.

    Alweer: kijken voor Lorenza Izzo. En om te zien hoe Keanu Reeves niet kan acteren en daardoor de film naar de verdoemenis helpt.

    Moeilijk. Weinig creativiteit, maar zeer goed gemaakt en alles klopt. Toch maar kijken.

    Het had zo mooi kunnen zijn, maar het einde verbrodt alles.

Shaun of the Dead is een begrip, een cultfilm die de carrière van Simon Pegg helemaal lanceerde, en een heel gemakkelijke introductie is tot het horrorgenre –al mist u dan misschien wel de verwijzingen naar de conventies van het genre.

Shaun is een absolute anti-hero, die de zombie apocalyps moet trotseren, maar net zo goed de relatie met zijn ex en zijn moeder moet onder controle krijgen. Elke verder poging tot omschrijving doet tekort aan de film. Deze film is een klassieker!

Trainwreck (2015)

Having thought that monogamy was never possible, a commitment-phobic career woman may have to face her fears when she meets a good guy.

Judd Apatow is de mens die het hilarische This is 40 heeft gemaakt, en Knocked Up, en het blijkbaar even hilarische The 40-Year-Old Virgin (heb ik niet gezien). Amy Schumer is de meest hotte comedy-vrouw van het moment, dus deze film kan niet kapot. Toch?

De Amerikaanders zijn er alvast in geslaagd de film een bezwarende ‘R’ (voor restricted) rating te geven, want een mannenverslindster, dat is toch nog steeds niet van deze tijd, vermoed ik. Niettemin zijn de reviews bijzonder lovend, en wist de wederhelft met zeer veel genoegen en gelach naar deze film te kijken. En oh… zoveel romantiek!

Stung (2015)

Hoe kunt ge dit niet leuk vinden. To-taal over the top, deze van de pot gerukte film over gigantische wespen die een kasteel op de buiten helemaal om zeep helpen.

Stung is het pretentieloze debuut van Benni Diez, zo vol understated humor, dat de kijker voortdurend denk dat dit wel een Britse film moet zijn (quod non, blijkbaar). Het is dan ook weinig verwonderlijk dat de Amerikaanse pers niet meteen tuk is op de ingehouden toon van de film, een gegeven dat schering en inslag is in de Europese cinema (Shaun of the Dead, om maar iets te zeggen).

De film is absoluut geen hoogvlieger, maar kon mij wakker houden, bezorgde spanning, en wist mij zelfs aan het lachen te brengen. Money well spent.

Bone Tomahawk (2015)

What the hell is dat hier met die westerns? Eerder deze maand zagen we het fantastische Slow West, nu zagen we dit al even fantastische Bone Tomahawk, en binnenkort kijken we naar Jauja (hopelijk worden de verwachtingen ook daar ingelost). Net zoals Slow West is ook Bone Tomahawk een debuut, en wat voor één!

Bone Tomahawk staat geboekstaafd als horror, maar behalve een paar –inderdaad– gruwelijke dingen, is dit geen horror zoals u zou verwachten. Voor minstens 90% is dit een gewone drama film die zich in de far west afspeelt.

Voor wie Hard Candy heeft gemist, en de Insidious franchise, The Conjuring en Zipper en zelfs Let’s Kill Ward’s Wife : het is hoog tijd dat u Patrick Wilson ontdekt. En wie dacht dat Kurt Russell helemaal afgedaan had: think again. Bone Tomahawk is een film waarin het scenario helemaal klopt, en de fotografie, en waarin alle acteurs het beste van zichzelf geven (wat een understatement).

De synopsis hierboven trekt op niks, en ik kan u eigenlijk niet echt meer vertellen dan wat er staat, maar neem van mij aan: dit is een film die u niet wilt gemist hebben –zelfs al houdt u niet van westerns of van horror.

Een mooi regiedebuut voor Severin Fiala en Veronika Franz. Vooral de fotografie is bijzonder mooi, en de manier waarop de thriller- (of horror-) elementen worden getoond. Goodnight Mummy (Ich seh, Ich seh) moet het niet hebben van de gratuite kiekeboemomenten. De gruwel kondigt zich aan in de alledaagse vanzelfsprekendheid waarmee de gebeurtenissen zich afspelen.

Een minpunt aan de film –maar dat misschien ten dele bij mij– is dat ik het plot al door had van bij de eerste aanwijzing. Ik ga het niet verklappen, maar het is heel vroeg in de film, en voor mij was de film dan ook niet veel meer dan afwachten of ik gelijk hij (jawel).

Het grootste probleem had ik echter met de focuswissel. De kijker werd voortdurend op het verkeerde been gezet, en het was dan ook moeilijk om plots sympathie te moeten opbrengen voor een ander gegeven (ik probeer zo neutraal mogelijk te blijven). Maar goed, hopelijk ondervindt u niet hetzelfde, want dit is een film met veel potentieel. Al kijk ik vooral uit naar een volgende film van dit duo.

In Their Skin (2012)

Het schrijvers- en regisseursdebuut van de mondvol Jeremy Power Regimbal, kan –als debuut– best tellen. Het is geen opvallend scenario, noch een opvallende film, maar het steekt min of meer goed in elkaar, al zijn de omstandigheden misschien weinig geloofwaardig. Maar dat is niet altijd aan de orde in dergelijke verhalen.

Zowel Joshua Close (heeft zijn stempel gedrukt op het scenario) als James D’Arcy kunnen een aanzienlijke lijst onopvallende rollen voorleggen, maar ik heb vooral een zwak voor Selma Blair. En dan heb ik eigenlijk niet eens zoveel films met haar gezien. Maar ik herinner me bijzonder goed Cruel Intentions, die inspeelde op Pierre Ambroise François Choderlos de Laclos hype, geïnstigeerd door de dubbele verfilming van zijn Les Liaisons dangereuses in Dangerous Liaisons en Valmont (met f-ing Colin Firth en Meg Tilly –wie kent Meg Tilly nog?) op het einde van de jaren 80. Een tiental jaar later verscheen die Cruel Intentions, eigenlijk een young adult versie van dat boek dat bijzonder veel aandacht kreeg, niet alleen om de geslaagde vertolking van Blair, maar (vooral) ook om de kus tussen Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) en Cecile Caldwell (Blair). Gellar was toen razend bekend om haar rol als Buffy in de Joss Whedon serie Buffy the Vampire Slayer, en de scènes van die kus heeft toen menig internetserver plat gekregen.

In Their Skin is dan weer een matige home invasion thriller, die waarschijnlijk graag de mosterd is gaan halen bij Michael Hanekes beide Funny Games. De film is matig onderhoudend, twijfelt een beetje tussen inhoud en actie, en dat is zelden goed voor de continuïteit. Als u geïnteresseerd bent in dat soort dingen, raad ik u ten sterkste Funny Games zelf aan. De versie van 2007, met Naomi Watts en Michael Pitt, is het gemakkelijkst verkrijgbaar.

Miljaar, dit is een moeilijke.
Ik ben hevig fan van het Milgram Experiment sinds ik het in mijn jeugd bijzonder bondig en zeer to the point zag uitgelegd in de erg ondergewaardeerde film I… comme Icare van Henri Verneuil, waarin Yves Montand de procureur speelt die de moord op Kennedy moet oplossen. Enfin, Kennedy heet in de film Marc Jarry, maar al de rest is bijzonder sterk overeenkomstig. Bekijk die film als u de kans daartoe hebt!

Michael Almereyda is een weinig bekend regisseur, maakte een aantal films waarvan ik er mij geen enkele kan herinneren, en zal ook met deze film geen blijvend zitje in het pantheon der filmmakers verkrijgen. Let wel: het is een goed gemaakte, interessante film, met een aantal bijzonder interessante filmtechnieken –en dan heb ik het niet over special effects. Almereyda deinst er niet voor terug om de barrière tussen acteur en kijker te overschrijden, door Milgram (Peter Sarsgaard) het publiek direct te laten aanspreken. Hij maakt gebruik van een soort theatrale (= ontleend aan het theater) aanpak waarbij scènes gebruik maken van een duidelijk gekunstelde achtergrond (zoals een scènedoek in het theater) met een artificiële raamvertelling. Hij laat Milgram verder vertellen over wat er gebeurd na zijn dood. Kortom, Experimenter is een cinematografisch interessant gegeven, dat consistent wordt uitgewerkt.

Het Milgram Experiment is bovendien een niet te overschatten gegeven. Milgram wou in de eerste plaats onderzoeken wat er was gebeurd tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog, d.w.z. waarom mensen zomaar blindelings de bevelen van hun oversten opvolgden, en de resultaten van het onderzoek waren zo onthutsend dat ze in eerste instantie door de academia werden verworpen. Ondertussen blijken die resultaten nog steeds actueel –de mens conformeert– en zal Milgram voor eeuwig hebben bijgedragen aan de supporters van het cultuurpessimisme.

Maar ga vooral naar de film kijken. De vertelling is boeiend, het onderwerp belangrijk.

The Gift (2015)

A young married couple’s lives are thrown into a harrowing tailspin when an acquaintance from the husband’s past brings mysterious gifts and a horrifying secret to light after more than 20 years.

Joel Edgerton was zo tevreden over zijn idee dat hij niet alleen het scenario voor deze film schreef, maar hem ook regisseerde, en zich vervolgens een lelijke ringbaard en een dito kapsel aanmat, om deze film helemaal naar zijn hand te zetten. Het begint allemaal spannend. Het verhaal schept bepaalde verwachtingen, die op een andere manier worden ingevuld dan via het pad waarop Edgerton u wandelen stuurt, en de kijker zit voortdurend de wachten op een aanzet, voorzet, of ontknoping. De film ken een grote dosis ambiguïteit, die helaas ook wat de doodsteek wordt.

Het wachten duurt eigenlijk net iets te lang, en de ontknoping, na één uur en tien minuten film, transformeert deze prent van interessante thriller naar VijfTV-drama. Wat kan ik dan meer doen, dan dit alweer bijzonder jammer vinden. Het zag er echt wel goed uit, maar opdat de ontknoping het juiste effect zou gehad hebben, hadden we eigenlijk veel meer achtergrond nodig gehad. Die ontknoping, is trouwens eigenlijk stof genoeg voor een film op zich, en de afwikkeling had baat gehad bij veel meer diepgang en een correcte spanningsboog, die nu als een donderslag bij heldere hemel op de kijker wordt losgelaten. Kijk, zegt Edgerton, hier hebben we een boosaard, hier hebben we een fatalistisch, deterministisch gegeven. Trek er uw plan mee. Het zit erin, maar dat was mijn bedoeling niet.

De acteerprestaties zijn naar behoren. Ondanks zijn verschrikkelijke vermomming, geeft Edgerton zelf heel mooi gestalte aan Gordo, en zelfs Jason Bateman is op zijn beste doen sedert… tsja, sedert Juno zeker? Wat Rebecca Hall betreft, ik ben nog steeds benieuwd naar haar A Promise (van Patrice Leconte), want haar vele transformaties in deze The Gift blijven steeds geloofwaardig.

Een goede aanzet, deze film, maar een belabberd einde.
