    Genietbare spektakelfilm, als is het wat verwarrend met die Avengers-film die daar eigenlijk nog tussen hoort.
36. 12 Years a Slave / Steve McQueen / 2013
    In the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.
    Ziet dat nu, de winnaar van de Oscars. Gekeken omdat het van Steve McQueen, de man van het fantastische Shame en van Hunger, films die ook al op die zeer beheerste manier in beeld werden gebracht. Ik kijk verwachtingsvol uit naar zijn volgende film.
37. In Fear / Jeremy Lovering / 2013
    Driving to a music festival in Ireland, a new couple become lost and are then set upon by a tormentor with an unknown motive.
    Te weinig licht, te voorspelbaar, te weinig uitwerking en tegelijktertijd te lang uitgesponnen. De acteerprestaties van Alice Englert zijn wel als deftig te omschrijven.
38. Side Effects / Steven Soderbergh / 2013
    A young woman’s world unravels when a drug prescribed by her psychiatrist has unexpected side effects.
    Dat zien we dan wel weer graag. Hoewel het zeker niet vernieuwend is, zit deze film structureel goed in elkaar, en laat de kijker zich graag meeslepen in de spanningsboog. Soderbergh is een zeer wisselvallige regisseur, maar met deze film heeft hij alvast degelijk werk geleverd.

    An elite team of Navy SEALs embark on a covert mission to recover a kidnapped CIA agent.
40. Room in Rome / Julio Medem / 2010
    A hotel room in the center of Rome serves as the setting for two young and recently acquainted women to have a physical adventure that touches their very souls.
    Soft porno, dacht ik eerst, maar de film bleek vooral functioneel (jaja) naakt te bevatten en daarnaast interessante dialogen, al bleef de premisse niet ver genoeg uitgewerkt. Wreed spijtig van het slecht Engels. En ik ontdekte pas achteraf dat het een film van Medem betrof, maar in hindsight paste dat perfect in het plaatje. (Medem is de man van Los amantes del Círculo Polar en Lucía y el sexo en La ardilla roja, films die ik dringend eens moet herbekijken.)

    Moments before his comeback performance, a concert pianist who suffers from stage fright discovers a note written on his music sheet.
    Tegelijkertijd beter én slechter dan ik had verwacht. Een opeenstapeling van clichés, maar het heeft wel iets.
42. Monsters University / Dan Scanlon / 2013
    A look at the relationship between Mike and Sulley during their days at Monsters University — when they weren’t necessarily the best of friends.
43. State of Play / Kevin Macdonald / 2009
    When a congressional aide is killed, a Washington D.C. journalist starts investigating the case involving the congressman, his old college friend.
    Een beetje politiek, een pak onderzoeksjournalistiek en een knappe jonge journaliste in opleiding; romantiek en spanning. Het is het soort films dat ik graag zie. Ondanks Russell Crowe. (Of dank zijn Rachel McAdams.)
44. Veronica Mars / Rob Thomas / 2014
    Years after walking away from her past as a teenage private eye, Veronica Mars gets pulled back to her hometown – just in time for her high school reunion – in order to help her old flame Logan Echolls, who’s embroiled in a murder mystery.
    Ik vermoed dat dit gefundenes fressen is voor de fans van de serie, maar ik had er niet zoveel aan –behalve hier en daar een interessante scene.
45. Here Comes the Devil (Ahí va el diablo) / Adrián García Bogliano / 2012
    A married couple loses their children while on a family trip near some caves in Tijuana. The kids eventually reappear without explanation, but it becomes clear that they are not who they used to be, that something terrifying has changed them.
    Intrigerend en bevat een paar uitstekende plotwendingen, maar het einde getuigt van weinig creativiteit.
46. Assault on Wall Street / Uwe Boll / 2013
    Jim is an average New Yorker living a peaceful life with a well paying job and a loving family. Suddenly, everything changes when the economy crashes causing Jim to lose everything. Filled with anger and rage, Jim snaps and goes to extreme lengths to seek revenge for the life taken from him.
    Zo stel ik mij de mensen voor die commentaren schrijven op HLN en andere internetdinges, als Jim Baxford (gespeeld door Dominic Purcell).

    By day Abby Russell is a dedicated nurse, someone you wouldn’t hesitate to trust your life with. 48. The Slumber Party Massacre / Amy Holden Jones / 1982
    An eighteen-year-old high school girl is left at home by her parents and she decides to have a slumber party. There is friction between some of the invited guests and the new girl, who is better at basketball than they, so the new girl decides to stay at home (which is conveniently across the street from the host’s house). Meanwhile, a murderer of five people with a propensity for power tools has escaped and is at large, and eventually makes his way to the party, where the guests begin experiencing an attrition problem, with only the new girl to help them.

Veel ziek geweest, en daardoor veel brol bekeken, maar ik moet echt van de Rex&Rio abonnement af. 1st world problems, zegt u. Wel, ik kan u niet tegenspreken.

Als u er maar eentje bekijkt, uit deze lijst, dan is het Jagten. Zijn het er twee, dan komt Call Girl erbij. Als er een derde bij moet, dan is het Afternoon Delight. De rest mag u zonder al te veel gebrom gewoon overslaan.

    Slecht. Zonder meer.

    De klassieke Woody Allen neurotisch-pessimistische thematiek komt hier rijkelijk aan bod. Niet helemaal mijn ding.
18. Afternoon Delight / Jill Soloway / 2013
    Rachel is a quick-witted and lovable stay-at-home mom. Frustrated with the realities of preschool auctions, a lackluster sex life and career that’s gone kaput, Rachel visits a strip club to spice up her marriage and meets McKenna, a stripper she adopts as her live-in nanny.
    Had hier Woody Allen gestaan als regisseur, dan had het in alle media lovende kritieken gekregen. Geen bijzondere film, maar ik vond het beter dan Blue Jasmine. Langspeelfilm debuut van Jill Soloway.
19. Homefront / Gary Fleder / 2013
    A former DEA agent moves his family to a quiet town, where he soon tangles with a local meth druglord.
    Jason Statham is hoofdpersonage in deze film die het niet oet hebben van de originaliteit of verrassend acteertalent. Zet uw verstand even op een laag pitje, en ontspan.
20. The Human Race / Paul Hough / 2013
    Veronica suddenly finds herself in a surreal and horrifying marathon race. The rules are simple: If you are lapped, you die. If you step off the path, you die. Many will start but only one may cross the finish line alive.
    Ik vrees dat u hier uw verstand zal moeten uitschakelen –en dan zal het nog niet volstaan. Slecht, en bijzonder preuts, samenraapsel van allerlei andere films.
21. After All These Years / Scott Smith / 2013
    When a woman is wrongly accused of the death of her ex-husband, she sets out to solve the murder mystery and find the real killer before the day of the funeral, when she is to be taken into custody.
    Onschuldige whodunit met niet veel om het lijf.
22. Spring Breakers / Harmony Korine / 2012
    Four college girls hold up a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation. While partying/drinking/taking drugs they are arrested only to be bailed out by a drug and arms dealer.
    Bijzonder bevreemdende film over vier meisjes die zowat de ganse film in bikini rondlopen. Intrigerend, maar bizar.
23. Thor / Kenneth Branagh & Joss Whedon / 2011
    The powerful but arrogant god Thor is cast out of Asgard to live amongst humans in Midgard (Earth), where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.
    Een (mooie) proloog op de tweede film?
24. Call Girl / Mikael Marcimain / 2012
    A young girl is recruited from the bottom rung of society into a ruthless world where power can get you anything.
    Een gefictionaliseerde versie van de Zweedse Roze Balletten, Bordellhärvan (beide dateren uit de jaren 70). De film is goed geacteerd, en werd zonder preutsheid in beeld gebracht (en ook zonder onnodige expliciete scènes).
25. Man On A Ledge / Asger Leth / 2012
    As a police psychologist works to talk down an ex-con who is threatening to jump from a Manhattan hotel rooftop, the biggest diamond heist ever committed is in motion.
    De afloop van deze film is weinig verrassend natuurlijk, maar de opbouw en de spanningsboog mogen er best wezen.
26. The Numbers Station / Kasper Barfoed / 2013
    A disgraced black ops agent is dispatched to a remote CIA broadcast station to protect a code operator. Soon, they find themselves in a life-or-death struggle to stop a deadly plot before it’s too late.
    Negeer.
27. Afterparty / Miguel Larraya / 2013
    Carlos, een tv-ster en tieneridool, wordt uitgenodigd voor een wild feestje. De ochtend erna wordt hij wakker in een sinister huis met drie meisjes waarmee hij de vorige avond contact heeft gehad. Met alle communicatiemogelijkheden afgesloten en geen manier om te ontsnappen komen ze er al snel achter dat ze niet alleen in het huis zijn en wellicht nooit in staat zullen zijn om te ontsnappen.     Uiterst voorspelbare slasher –negeer.
28. Thérèse Desqueyroux / Claude Miller / 2012
    An unhappily married woman struggles to break free from social pressures.
    De meest idiote synopsis, dat stukje hierboven, maar ook de film laat de kijker op zijn honger zitten. Er is weinig inzicht in het personage waar schrijver François Mauriac (Nobelprijswinnaar) later nog een keer of drie op zou terug komen, de benauwdheid van Thérèse, de gevangenis van het leven. Het boek is beter dan de film.
29. Breaking the Girls / Jamie Babbit / 2013
    Sara, a college student who was slandered by a classmate, finds herself framed for murder by Alex, who initially proposed the perfect, untraceable crime.
    Het acteertalent kan er nog net door, maar het plot is bezwaarlijk origineel te noemen.
30. Haywire / Steven Soderbergh / 2011
    A black ops super soldier seeks payback after she is betrayed and set up during a mission.
    Voelt aan als een slechte indie-film, en laat zich met moeite bekijken. De plot is nodeloos ingewikkeld, en blijft voortdurend aarzelen tussen actie en inhoud. Negeer.
31. Jagten / Thomas Vinterberg / 2012
    A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son’s custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.Brrr. Zeer aangrijpende en goed gemaakte film van Vinterberg over een valselijk (van pedofilie) beschuldigde man en de impact die het gegeven heeft op een kleine gemeenschap. Kijken!
32. The Last Days on Mars / Ruairi Robinson / 2013
    A group of astronaut explorers succumb one by one to a mysterious and terrifying force while collecting specimens on Mars.
    Een bekijkenswaardige film over een virale epidemie op mars. Geen hoogvlieger, maar wel veel interessanter dan laat vermoeden.
33. After the Dark / John Huddles / 2013
    At an international school in Jakarta, a philosophy teacher challenges his class of twenty graduating seniors to choose which ten of them would take shelter underground and reboot the human race in the event of a nuclear apocalypse.
    Oorspronkelijke heette de film The Philosophers, maar om één of andere reden werd de titel gewijzigd. Het is een niet zo bijster interessant gegeven, en er zitten een paar filosofielessen voor dummies in verwerkt, maar eigenaardig genoeg bleef het concept toch wat boeien. De vraagstukken worden visueel verwerkt, m.a.w. dit is geen eindeloze dialoogfilm, en maar goed ook, want dan zou er niet veel van zijn overgebleven. Een progressief geconcipieerde film, die diversiteit en feminisme promoot, maar niet op een opvallend-irritante manier.
34. Out Of The Furnace / Scott Cooper / 2013
    When Rodney Baze mysteriously disappears and law enforcement doesn’t follow through fast enough, his older brother, Russell, takes matters into his own hands to find justice.
    Er zit een fantastische en uitstekend acterend cast in deze productie: Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Sam Shepard en Willem Dafoe. Het verhaal is rauw en hartverscheurend en houdt het midden tussen een soortement romantische film en een tragedie. Inclusief een paar erg realistische vechtscènes (bare fist fighting). Goed, maar niet uitzonderlijk.

Het was vakantie, en we moesten ons abonnement op Rex&Rio ten gelde maken (of zoiets). Dus: te veel brol gezien –dingen die ik anders nooit zou bekeken hebben. Ik denk niet dat ik op dat filmkanaal geabonneerd ga blijven.

1. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug / Peter Jackson / 2013
   The dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is in possession of a mysterious and magical ring.
   Beter dan het eerste deel, en ik heb mij geen moment verveeld –hoewel de toch wel lange film tot na 23 u. heeft geduurd, heb ik ook geen enkel moment van ‘vermoeidheid’ gevoeld.
2. Closed Circuit / John Crowley / 2013
   A high-profile terrorism case unexpectedly binds together two ex-lovers on the defense team – testing the limits of their loyalties and placing their lives in jeopardy.
   Spannende, en tot op een zekere hoogte ook onderhoudende film, maar een mens blijft op zijn honger zitten. Met Rebecca Hall, die u misschien herkent van Iron Man 3.
3. About Time / Richard Curtis / 2013
   At the age of 21, Tim discovers he can travel in time and change what happens and has happened in his own life. His decision to make his world a better place by getting a girlfriend turns out not to be as easy as you might think.
   Er zitten gaten in het principe van dat tijdsreizen, maar het is een mooie film. Over vaderschap en coming of age en al. Graag gezien.
4. You’re Next / Adam Wingard / 2011
   When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.
   De betere ‘slasher’: een goed verhaal, met een mooie structuur en een proper (in het genre passende) einde.
5. De verbouwing / Will Koopman / 2012
   Voornamelijk gekeken omdat het hoofdpersonage een arts is die Tessa heet. In eerste instantie vond ik het wel ok, maar de film liet me achteraf onvervuld achter. Er is te weinig uitdieping, het overstijgt de gemiddelde Pieter Aspe niet. De film ís overigens gebaseerd op een (gelijknamig) boek, niet van Pieter Aspe maar van Saskia Noort. Mogelijks is het interessanter om dat te lezen.
6. House at the End of the Street / Mark Tonderai / 2012
   When a teenager and her mother move to a little town, the girl finds that an accident happened in the house at the end of the street. But things get complicated when she befriends a boy who is the only survivor in the accident.
   Ik was er eigenlijk van overtuigd dat ik hem al zou gezien hebben –een snelle zoekopdracht op dit blog leverde geen resultaten op, dus ben ik maar beginnen kijken (en nee, ik had hem nog niet gezien). De film zit degelijk in elkaar, met een interessante twist in een voor de rest voor de hand liggend plot. Er bestaan slechtere films (maar ook veel betere).
7. Brownian Movement / Nanouk Leopold / 2010
   Charlotte and Max live with their young son in Brussels. When Max finds out Charlotte has been taking some of her male patients to a rented apartment, their relationship is put to the test. Charlotte agrees to go to therapy and is forced to stop working as a doctor. When they move to India because of his work, both seem happy again, at least initially. For it appears that their past has not been completely laid to rest.
8. Gravity / Alfonso Cuarón / 2013
   A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space.
   Een beetje overroepen, maar een puike acteerprestatie.
9. The Grey / Joe Carnahan / 2011
   After their plane crashes in Alaska, six oil workers are led by a skilled huntsman to survival, but a pack of merciless wolves haunts their every step.
   Bof. Ik had het verhaal al door van bij het begin, en voor de rest is het tien kleine negertjes.
10. Insidious: Chapter 2 / James Wan / 2013
    The haunted Lambert family seeks to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world.
    Ik heb de eerste film niet gezien, maar deze film zit alvast structureel heel mooi in elkaar. Zeer geslaagd tijdverdrijf.
11. Trap for Cinderella / Iain Softley / 2013
    A young girl suffering from amnesia after surviving a house fire that takes her childhood friend’s life, begins a tormented road to recovery.
    Deze film, gebaseerd op een boek van Sébastien Japrisot (van Un long dimanche de fiançailles), is enorm ondergewaardeerd. Het verhaal is niet onvoorspelbaar, maar de acteerprestaties zijn goed en het verhaal zit goed in elkaar. Graag gezien.
12. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire / Francis Lawrence / 2013
    Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.
    Ik bleef een beetje op mijn honger zitten. Deel twee is meer van hetzelfde, en de agonie van de personages komt niet zo goed tot uiting als in het boek. Het derde boek hebben ze blijkbaar in twee films opgedeeld.
13. Meet Dave / Brian Robbins / 2008
    A crew of miniature aliens operate a spaceship that has a human form. While trying to save their planet, the aliens encounter a new problem, as their ship becomes smitten with an Earth woman.
    Lang geleden dat ik nog eens een film met Eddie Murphy heb gezien. Hij blijft aanvaardbaar grappig in deze verder niet meteen van creativiteit uitblinkende film.
14. Ender’s Game / Gavin Hood / 2013
    Young Ender Wiggin is recruited by the International Military to lead the fight against the Formics, a genocidal alien race which nearly annihilated the human race in a previous invasion
    Deze film is gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek van Orson Scott Card (dat eerst als kortverhaal werd gepubliceerd in 1977 en nadien tot boek werd uitgewerkt in 1985). Het verhaal (in de film, ik heb de boeken niet gelezen) bevat elementen die ik beter uitgewerkt heb gezien in pakweg Starship Troopers (1997) en Wargames (1983), en het voorspelbare einde lag er al van bij het begin aan te komen. Interessant als jeugdfilm, maar meer ook niet.
15. Chariot / Brad Osborne / 2013
    Seven strangers find themselves unwitting participants in a U.S. government evacuation program gone horribly wrong.
    Een niet onaardige poging, maar een beetje te ver doorgedreven.

Euh, we hebben in extremis een abonnement op Rex & Rio genomen. De eerste indruk is dat er weinig echt recents is, en dat het bijzonder jammer is dat er heel erg weinig films beschikbaar zijn in HD –het moet daarom geen 1080p bluray zijn, 720p was ook al goed geweest. Helaas dus. Eens zien of ik het abonnement langer dan de winter laat doorlopen.

Edoch, zo komen we toch nog aan meer dan 100 films per jaar. En dan heb ik de series nog niet meegerekend.

Wat betreft de series; ik ben helemaal mee met: Criminal Minds, Fringe (afgelopen begin 2013), Grimm, Hannibal, Homeland, Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Rookie Blue, Scandal, The Blacklist, The Fall, The Following, The Vampire Diaries & The Walking Dead.

Stonden dit jaar on hold of kijk ik slechts incidenteel naar: American Horror Story, Bones, Castle, Covert Affairs, Elementary, Game of Thrones, Nikita, Person of Intrest (waarvan er slechts een stuk van het eerste seizoen op tv werd uitgezonden), Revolution & Warehouse 13.

    9to5 – Days in Porn is a German documentary film about the United States porn industry written and directed by Jens Hoffmann. It is also known as “The Porn Diaries”.
99. Io sono l’amore / Luca Guadagnino / 2009
    A tragic love story set at the turn of the millennium in Milan. The film follows the fall of the haute bourgeoisie due to the forces of passion and unconditional love.
    De eerste keer dat ik Tilda Swinton aan het werk heb gezien was tijdens het –vond ik toen toch– fenomenale Orlando. Ik heb het boek van Virginia Woolf nadien verslonden en ik vond toen nog steeds dat ze een prachtige invulling aan de rol van Orlando heeft gegeven. Ook in deze ietwat bevreemde film speelt ze heel goed: de tragiek en de vertedering gaan haar schitterend af. Een fantastische soundtrack ook, die muziek gebruikt van John Adams.

     Eéndimensionele brol, waar we hooguit eens goed mee hebben gelachen. Voor de rest: te vermijden.

     Bekeken op 24x speed tot ik op real time zat (het laatste kwartier). Niets gemist.

(Ondertussen –maar dit geheel terzijde– zit ik al een paar dagen met migraine, maar het begint eindelijk wat af te nemen.)

93. Despicable Me 2 / Pierre Coffin & Chris Renaud / 2013
    Gru is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help deal with a powerful new super criminal.
    Nope, dit verhaal is nog niet uitgemolken. Descpicable Me 2 is een onderhoudende en redelijk creatieve mainstream film. Mooi.
94. V for Vendetta / James McTeigue / 2005
    A shadowy freedom fighter known only as “V” uses guerrilla tactics to fight against his terrorist, totalitarian society. Upon rescuing a girl from the secret police, he also finds his best chance at having an ally.
    Voila zie, daarmee hebben Henri en Tessa die ook eens gezien. En de zoon is meteen wat gaan opzoeken over Guy Fawkes, luttele dagen voor 5 november dan nog.
95. The Conjuring / James Wan / 2013
    Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.
    Mooie genrefilm, weinig verrassend, maar mooi in beeld gebracht en onderhoudend.
96. The Wolverine / James Mangold / 2013
    When Wolverine is summoned to Japan by an old acquaintance, he is embroiled in a conflict that forces him to confront his own demons.
    Behalve dan dat er messen uit zijn handen komen en dat hij onsterfelijk is, kond deze film eigenlijk een doordeweekse actiefilm zijn. Er komt naar ’t schijnt een vervolg.

    Nog eentje met (een schier onherkenbare behalve voor de typecasting) Hugh Jackman. Dit overstijgt de gemiddelde Hollywoodfilm. Een film met een intrigerende en spannende plotlijn.

En toen was hte filmfestival, en gingen we nog eens een paar films bekijken. Een paar was in dit geval 23, maar daar treuren we niet om. Ik lijst ze hieronder nog eens op, alle besprekingen zijn onder één link gegroepeerd, mocht u daarin geïnteresseerd zijn.

Een paar filmen bleven bovendrijven, en ook na een week of twee-drie kan ik mij volgende films goed voor de geest halen (en ik zou zelfs een tweede keer durven gaan kijken): The Spectacular Now; Avant l’hiver; All Is Lost; Leones; Shirley: Visions of Reality; en Blue Ruin. Daarnaast kan ik u ook nog deze aanraden: Starlet; La chair de ma chair; Casse-tête chinois; What Maisie Knew; en Inside Llewyn Davis.

    Een bijzonder naïeve en redelijk voorspelbare film over eco-terrorisme. Met Brit Marling, die zo mooi de rol van Maggie speelde in Sound of My Voice
57. Daglicht / Diederik Van Rooijen / 2013
    De ambitieuze advocate Iris moet schipperen in haar rol als alleenstaande moeder en strafpleiter in, soms schemerige, zaken. Als ze in het huis van haar moeder Ageeth logeert, stuit ze op een duister familiegeheim. Ze blijkt een broer te hebben waarvan het bestaan altijd zorgvuldig is verzwegen.
    Grmpf. Beter dan verwacht. Een mager begin, maar de plot lijkt structureel en inhoudelijk mooi in elkaar te zitten. De moeite van het bekijken waard, zeker voor wie de Scandinavische thrillers genegen is. Gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek van Marion Pauw.
58. The Iceman / Ariel Vromen / 2012
    The true story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer and family man. When finally arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor daughters have any clue about his real profession.
    Mooi in beeld gebracht, en een glansrijke vertolking van Michael Shannon als Kuklinski. Niettemin is dit een zwaar geromantiseerde en weinig uitgediepte versie van het gegeven. Voor wie de dingen wil zien vanuit het perspectief van Kuklinki’s vrouw, Barbara, is er het korte artikel Married to The Iceman.
59. World War Z / Marc Forster / 2013
    United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself.
    Niets nieuws, maar mooi gemaakt en met een zeker spanningsboog. Het blijft mooi sober, al haalt het niet het niveau van pakweg I am Legend.
60. Star Trek Into Darkness / J.J. Abrams / 2013
    After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.
    Deel twee van de reboot blijft onderhoudend en legt nog steeds een aanvaardbare link met de oorspronkelijke serie/films.
61. Sleeping Beauty / Julia Leigh / 2011
    A haunting portrait of Lucy, a young university student drawn into a mysterious hidden world of unspoken desires.
    Een mooie, stilistische film, gedeeltelijk gebaseerd op het boek The House of the Sleeping Beauties van Yasunari Kawabata, al heeft Wikipedia het ook over Memories of My Melancholy Whores van Gabriel Garcia Marquez en het bijbelse verhaal van Koning David die als oude man de avond spendeert aan de zijde van slapende maagden. En er is natuurlijk het sprookje –al is het enige verband zowat de slotscène van de film. Het is in elk geval een intrigerende film.
62. Redemption / Steven Knight / 2013
    Homeless and on the run from a military court martial, a damaged ex-special forces soldier navigating London’s criminal underworld seizes an opportunity to assume another man’s identity — transforming into an avenging angel in the process.
    In het geval van Julia Leigh hierboven, was het een goede zaak dat de regisseur en de scenarist dezelfde persoon waren, in het geval van Steven Knight ben ik daar niet zo van overtuigd. Het verhaal is flinterdun –zelfs voor een film met Jason Statham, en raakt eigenlijk niet van de grond. Het is dezelfde man die het zwaar overschatte Eastern Promises schreef trouwens. Heel hard te mijden.

    Three college friends hit the biggest party of the year, where a mysterious phenomenon disrupts the night, quickly descending into a chaos that challenges their friendships — and whether they can stay alive.
    De synopsis belooft zaken die niet worden uitgewerkt, al heeft de film een min of meer interessante premisse. Het draait echter allemaal uit op een simpele allegorie, terwijl dit een echt goede film had kunnen worden. Regisseur Illiades had eerder een niet onverdienstelijke remake van The Last House on the Left gemaakt.

    Het heeft wel iets, maar spijtig dat Nicolas ‘ik kan maar één typetje neerzetten’ Cage meespeelt.
65. Oblivion / Joseph Kosinski / 2013
    A veteran assigned to extract Earth’s remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.
    Waar heb ik dit nog gezien? Samenraapsel van allerhande andere films op weinig boeiende wijze bij elkaar gebracht.
