We zijn al half januari, maar hierbij toch nog mijn filmlijstje van 2014! Veel leesplezier, maar hopelijk vooral kijkplezier.

Vorig jaar (enfin, in 2013), zijn we gestrand op 107 films; in 2014 zijn het er 212 geworden. In de eindlijst van 2013 maakte ik nog gewag van Rex & Rio, dat door telenet ondertussen omgeschakeld werd naar Play, Het abonnement op Rex & Rio werd al gauw opgezegd, wegens niet kwalitatief genoeg en een kwantitatief te laag aanbod. In de plaats daarvan kwam dit jaar Netflix, dat telenet ondertussen met Play tracht te beconcurreren. De gewone play (10 euro per maand) lijkt mij niet interessant genoeg, Play More is mij veel te duur. Netflix dus.

We zijn ook weer mee wat betreft series; worden (nog steeds) gevolgd: The Affair (schitterende serie, die terecht een Golden Globe heeft gekregen), Arrow (een boogschieter die de last van de wereld op zijn rug tornt), Bitten (een clan weerwolven), Crisis (de ontoering van de kroost van een aantal prominenten), Extant (oftewel the entity from outer space, met Halle Berry), The Following (Kevin Bacon vs de cult), Forever (een onsterfelijke lijkschouwer), Game of Thrones (de winter is komende), Grimm (elk sprookje bevat een grond van waarheid), Helix (de menselijke GMO), Hemlock Grove (vampieren en weerwolven die u amper als dusdanig te zien krijgt), Homeland (infiltratie/exfiltratie), The Honourable Woman (de Palestijnse kwestie), How To Get Away With Murder (wat de titel zegt), The Last Ship (het schip dat de wereld moet redden), Madam Secretary (vrouwen aan de macht, met Tea Leone), Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (volledig verweven met de filmfranchise), Person of Interest (opgelet voor AI), Rookie Blue (flikken), Scandal (los gebaseerd op crisis manager Judy Smith), Stalker (over stalkers, met Maggie Q), The Strain (een barslechte verfilming van een al niet zo denderende boekenreeks van Guillermo del Toro en Chuck Hogan), Transporter: The Series (in seizoen twee hebben ze de blote vrouwen achterwege gelaten), Unforgettable (een agente met een onuitwisbaar geheugen), The Vampire Diaries (dé vampierensoap), en The Walking Dead (dé zombiesoap).

     A prologue of one heart-breaking history of love and the prologue of the travel told in The Darjeeling Limited (2007).
     Een dertien minuten pareltje van Wes Anderson, met Jason Schwartzman en Natalie Portman.
186. App / Bobby Boermans / 2013 / *1/2
     A young psychology student is drawn into the dark and fearful world of a diabolic and mysterious App that starts to terrorize her, distributing compromising photographs, videos and text messages about herself and delves deeper and deeper into her personal life, flawlessly exposing all of her deepest secrets.
     Van de regisseur van Claustrofobia, en met Hannah Hoekstra, die een bijzonder geschift-geslaagde vertolking gaf in Hemel (hm –ik moet dat eens herbekijken). Was naar het schijnt ‘interactief’ (via een smartphone app) met het cinemazaalpubliek, toen het gereleast werd.
187. I Origins / Mike Cahill / 2014 / **1/2
     A molecular biologist and his laboratory partner uncover evidence that may fundamentally change society as we know it.
     Ik was helemaal klaar om vier sterren te geven, voor deze goed in elkaar gepuzzelde en verrassende film. Het einde heeft helaas al het voorafgaande werk genadeloos om zeep geholpen. Zo’n zonde. En zo beneden het niveau van Cahill en Marling. Sla het einde over, en u hebt een schitterende film. (Lees dit interview met Marling: Talking Gluten-Free Living, and Other Cults, With Brit Marling)
188. Another Earth / Mike Cahill / 2011 / ***
     On the night of the discovery of a duplicate Earth in the Solar system, an ambitious young student and an accomplished composer cross paths in a tragic accident.
     Tragisch is wel het sleutelwoord hier. Slechts zelden krijgen we nog zo’n tragedie, bijna in de klassieke betekenis van het woord/genre voorgeschoteld. Dit is een understated, pareltje van een film. Sinds ik Sound of My Voice gezien heb, ben ik fan van Marling.
189. The Damned / Víctor García / 2013 / *
     After a family is involved in an accident, they take refuge in a secluded inn where they free a girl locked in a basement without knowing she’s an ancient evil spirit.
     Er zit potentieel in, en er word af en toe goed geacteerd, maar het is niet meteen memorabel.
190. Tracks / John Curran / 2014 / ***
     A young woman goes on a 1,700-mile trek across the deserts of West Australia with four camels and her faithful dog.
     Mia Wasikowska zet hier een onwaarschijnlijk goede vertolking neer van Robyn Davidson, die in 1977 te voet van Alice Springs naar de Australische West Coast trok. Ze publiceerde een artikel in 1978 met haar wedervaren, en dat werd nadien uitgewerkt tot het boek, waarop deze film is gebaseerd.
191. Maps to the Stars / David Cronenberg / 2014 / **
     A tour into the heart of a Hollywood family chasing celebrity, one another and the relentless ghosts of their pasts.
     Dit was dan weer iets te meta voor mij. Ik bekijk liever de oudere films van Cronenberg. Uitstekende vertolkingen, dat wel.
192. The Double / Richard Ayoade / 2013 / ***
     A clerk in a government agency finds his unenviable life takes a turn for the horrific with the arrival of a new co-worker who is both his exact physical double and his opposite – confident, charismatic and seductive with women.
     Dit is dan weer een uiterst geslaagde film: absurd, tragisch, geobjectiveerd en onderhoudend. Uitstekende vertolkingen alweer van Wasikowska én van Jesse Eisenberg.
193. The Maze Runner / Wes Ball / 2014 / *1/2
     Thomas is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased, soon learning they’re all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow “runners” for a shot at escape.
     De nieuwe Hunger Games est arrivé!
194. Guardians of the Galaxy / James Gunn / 2014 / **1/2
     A group of intergalactic criminals are forced to work together to stop a fanatical warrior from taking control of the universe.
     Hilarisch, ontspannend, onderhoudend. Meer van dat.
195. [REC] 4: Apocalipsis / regisseur / 2014 / *
     The television reporter Ángela is rescued from the building and taken to an oil tanker to be examined. However, it is unbeknown to the soldiers that she carries the seed of the mysterious demonic virus.
     Zitten we aan het einde van de franchise? Natuurlijk niet. Deze aflevering is iets beter dan de vorige, meen ik mij ter herinneren.
196. Take This Waltz / Sarah Polley / 2011 / ***
     A happily married woman falls for the artist who lives across the street.
     Ik weet niet geheel waarom, maar ik vind dit een goede film. Ondanks het soms wat te hoge chick flick gehalte. Het is al de tweede keer dat ik hem zie, en het overkomt me niet vaak, dat ik een film opnieuw bekijk. Michelle Williams (u kent haar nog van Dawson’s Creek), heeft een paar zeer goede acteermomenten in haar carrière; dit is er één van.
197. Panique au village / Stéphane Aubier & Vincent Patar / 2009 / ***
     Animated plastic toys like Cowboy, Indian and Horse have problems, too. Cowboy and Indian’s plan to surprise Horse with a homemade birthday gift backfires when they destroy his house instead. Surreal adventures take over as the trio travel to the center of the earth, trek across frozen tundra and discover a parallel underwater universe where pointy-headed (and dishonest!) creatures live. With panic a permanent feature of life in this papier mâché town, will Horse and his girlfriend ever be alone?
     Wat voor een gigantische, absurde trip is deze animatiefilm. Wie Disney of consoorten verwacht is er aan voor de moeite; wie bereid is mee te gaan in dit verbazingwekkend verhaal, beleeft gegarandeerd een heerlijke tijd. Bijzonder bizar!
198. The Lego Movie / Phil Lord & Christopher Miller / 2014 / **
     An ordinary Lego construction worker, thought to be the prophesied ‘Special’, is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the Lego universe into eternal stasis.
     Ontspannende familiefilm, met voldoende dubbele bodems om het voor iedereen interessant te houden. Puik.
199. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time / Mamoru Hosoda / 2006 / ***
     A teenage girl finds that she has the ability to leap through time. With her newfound power, she tries to use it to her advantage, but soon finds that tampering with time can lead to some rather discomforting results.
     Soms zitten er mooie dingen in de discount bak, zoals deze tekenfilm van Mamoru Hosoda.
200. Deadly Weekend / Jason Sutton / 2013 / 0
     Two young couples take one last trip to the country before moving to different cities. Unfortunately, when secrets come out and jealously takes a toll the weekend takes an unexpected and deadly turn for the worst.
     Een promofilm voor Sara Jean Underwood, zo heb ik de indruk. Te vermijden.
201. Annabelle / John R. Leonetti / 2014 / 1/2
     A couple begins to experience terrifying supernatural occurrences involving a vintage doll shortly after their home is invaded by satanic cultists.
     Deze film werd nodeloos moeilijk gemaakt, en mist tegelijk enige inhoudelijke diepgang. Het enige doel leek wel een link te maken met het veel betere The Conjuring.
202. The One I Love / Charlie McDowell / 2014 / *
     Struggling with a marriage on the brink of falling apart, a couple escapes for a weekend in pursuit of their better selves, only to discover an unusual dilemma that awaits them.
     Nice try, maar: geloofwaardigheid = nul.
203. The Perks of Being a Wallflower / Stephen Chbosky / 2012 / ***
     An introvert freshman is taken under the wings of two seniors who welcome him to the real world.
     Euh, wel, we kunnen alvast stellen dat de synopsis niets van het verhaal weggeeft. Het is en bijzonder boeiend en aangrijpen coming-of-age verhaal, met een paar twists die er van bij het begin eigenlijk vingerdik opleggen, maar die overtuigend worden gebracht door de acteurs. Auteur Chbosky regisseerde de film zelf, en schreef meer dan vijf jaar aan het verhaal, dat gepubliceerd werd als brievenroman. Hoog tijd om het eens te lezen.
204. Gone Girl / David Fincher / 2014 / ***
     Ik had het boek reeds gelezen in augustus 2012, en keek wel uit naar de verfilming. David Fincher heeft er een zeer degelijke verfilming van gemaakt (de man is ook de regisseur van Se7en, The Game, Fight Club, Panic Room, Zodiac en een hele rist videoclips), met een voortreffelijke Rosamund Pike in de rol van Amy Dunne. Alleen het einde leek mij anders dan wat ik mij van het boek (niet) herinnerde.
205. The Equalizer / Antoine Fuqua / 2014 / *1/2
     A man believes he has put his mysterious past behind him and has dedicated himself to beginning a new, quiet life. But when he meets a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can’t stand idly by – he has to help her.
     Van Olympus Has Fallen gaat regisseur Fuqua rechtstreeks naar deze Russische maffia, met een sociaal voelende ondertoon natuurlijk. Let wel, het is een geslaagde actiefilm, met een ijzig kalme Denzel Washington, en een opmerkelijk bizarre rol voor Chloë Grace Moretz, die in 2014 ook nog meespeelde in Laggies, If I Stay, en Clouds of Sils Maria.
206. The Captive / Atom Egoyan / 2014 / ***
     Eight years after the disappearance of Cassandra, some disturbing incidents seem to indicate that she’s still alive. Police, parents and Cassandra herself, will try to unravel the mystery of her disappearance.
     Men is voor of tegen Egoyan, blijkbaar. Ik heb uitstekende herinneringen aan pakweg Chloe (de remake van het Franse Nathalie), Where the Truth Lies en Exotica, en deze The Captive mag dat rijtje zonder schroom vervoegen. Egoyan vraagt net dat ietsje meer dan een conventionele regisseur, zonder dat de kijker iets van inlevingsvermogen moet inboeten. De afstandelijkheid en gelatenheid waarmee de nochtans niet evidente thematiek wordt aangesneden, draagt bij tot de waardering van de film.
207. No Good Deed / Sam Miller / 2014 / 1/2
     An unstable escaped convict terrorizes a woman who is alone with her two children.
     Laat ons hopen dat dit niet de reden is waarom Taraji P. Henson in Person of Interest (waar ze de rol van Joss Carter speelde) werd doodgeschoten.
208. These Final Hours / Zak Hilditch / 2014 / *1/2
     A self-obsessed young man makes his way to the party-to-end-all-parties on the last day on Earth, but ends up saving the life of a little girl searching for her father. Their relationship ultimately leads him on the path to redemption.
     Ofte: wat zou u doen tijdens uw laatste dag van de wereld. Zeker geen slechte film, al hoeven we niet te overdrijven in onze waardering.
209. Nikita / Luc Besson / 1991 / **1/2
     Convicted felon Nikita, instead of going to jail, is given a new identity and trained, stylishly, as a top secret spy/assassin.
     Een bijzonder trage film, naar hedendaagse maatstaf, ondanks het wervelend en lichtjes controversieel onderwerp. Besson bouwt de fundamenten van zijn filmische visie uit Subway verder uit, na zijn eerder romantische escape met Le Grand Bleu. De film kreeg twee jaar later een remake met Point of No Return (met Bridget Fonda in de hoofdrol), en werd achteraf uitgewerkt tot twee series (La Femme Nikita, 1997-2001 & Nikita, 2010-2013).
210. Léon / Luc Besson / 1994 / ***1/2
     Mathilda, a 12-year-old girl, is reluctantly taken in by Léon, a professional assassin, after her family is murdered. Léon and Mathilda form an unusual relationship, as she becomes his protégée and learns the assassin’s trade.
     Na het gigantisch succes van Le Grand Bleu en Nikita, scoort Besson opnieuw met deze Léon, het verhaal van de eponieme huurmoordenaar die vermenselijkt wanneer hij Mathilda (een rol voor de piepjonge Natalie Portman) leert kennen. Een baanbrekende film.
211. The Terminator / James Cameron / 1984 / ***1/2
     A human-looking indestructible cyborg is sent from 2029 to 1984 to assassinate a waitress, whose unborn son will lead humanity in a war against the machines, while a soldier from that war is sent to protect her at all costs.
     De film die zowel regisseur James Cameron als acteur Arnold Schwarzenegger (na het bescheiden succes van zijn Conan vertolking), helemaal op de cinema-kaart plaatsten. I’ll be back is dé onsterfelijke quote die u uit deze eerste terminator meedraagt.
212. Terminator 2: Judgement Day / James Cameron / 1991 / ***
     A cyborg, identical to the one who failed to kill Sarah Connor, must now protect her nine-year-old son, John, from a more advanced cyborg, made out of liquid metal.
     Er zijn zeven jaar verstreken tussen beide Terminator films. Cameron heeft ondertussen Aliens gemaakt, en ook het minder geslaagde The Abyss. Toch niet geheel onbelangrijk, die laatste film, want we zien dat Cameron een aantal special effects uit The Abyss in Terminator 2 heeft meegenomen. Schwarzenegger heeft het iets drukker gehad in die tijdspanne, met Red Sonja, Commando (met Rae Dawn Chong en Alyssa Milano), Raw Deal, Predator, Red Heat, en het baanbrekende Total Recall (maar helaas ook met Twins en Kindergarten Cop). En ziet: Schwarzenegger is niet alleen back, hij mag deze keer ook ‘de goede’ spelen. Het zou de laatste terminator van Cameron zijn… tot 2015!

Een pak films alweer, met een paar die behoorlijk de moeite waren. Focus u gerust op Black Swan, Super 8, Phenomena en The Descent. En smijt er gerust nog een American Burger tussen.

166. Reise Nach Agatis / Marian Dora / 2010 / **
     A young girl accepts a mysterious offer from a couple she just met to sail the world on a yacht. She is innocent and nubile, even if she finds herself attracted to them, suspecting she might be in for something more than just a fun-filled adventure. What she doesn’t realize is that the something more will go a long way, as the man has a violent past… an extremely shocking, violent past! Straight from the German underground, one of the most shocking and controversial films ever made explodes onto DVD. Massacre Video proudly presents Marian Dora’s ‘Voyage to Agatis’, completely uncut and uncensored!
     Deze film is zo obscuur, dat IMDB er niet eens een synopsis voor heeft. Niettemin kent de film een behoorlijke aanhang op de gespecialiseerde sites (Cinesploitation en Extreme Horror Cinema bijvoorbeeld). Regisseur Marian Doria is vooral bekend van zijn film Cannibal, die het (waargebeurde) verhaal brengt van de Duitse kannibaal Armin Meiwes, die in 2001 op een tijdspannen van 10 maanden 20 kg vlees van het lichaam van Bernd Jürgen Armando Brandes heeft gegeten. (Hij begon met diens penis, op aandringen van het geheel vrijwillige slachtoffer.) Die film heb ik evenwel niet gezien, maar Reise Nach Agatis zal voor de meeste mensen al een paar bruggen te ver zijn. Hoewel de regisseur reeds heeft vermeld dat het scenario voor de film eigenlijk pas van ondergeschikt belang was (er werden eerst acteurs gezocht en een jacht gecaterd, voor er maar aan een verhaallijn werd gedacht), is er een zeker rechtlijnigheid en een poging tot plot te bespeuren. De film is evenwel veeleer een momentopname, met min of meer artistieke merites, indien u zich tenminste over de thematiek kan zetten. Niet voor gevoelige zieltjes is in deze een bijzonder zwaar eufemisme.
167. Le règne de la beauté / Denys Arcand / 2014 / **
     Le film raconte l’histoire de Luc (Éric Bruneau), un architecte dans la trentaine en pleine ascension professionnelle, qui habite la région de Charlevoix, au Québec. Celui-ci vit le rêve : il est marié à une jolie entraîneuse sportive, il dispose d’un bon réseau d’amis et il s’adonne à de nombreuses activités sportives (chasse, pêche, ski, hockey, golf). Rien ne semble pouvoir atteindre sa vie parfaitement lisse et plane. À l’occasion d’un voyage à Toronto toutefois, Luc a une aventure avec une autre femme. Il la revoit une seconde fois alors que celle-ci est de passage à Québec. Alors que Luc tombe amoureux de sa nouvelle conquête, sa femme, qui éprouve des problèmes de santé mentale, songe à s’enlever la vie.
     Alweer een tranche de vie, maar dan van een heel andere slag. Een bevreemdende en ietwat verwarrende film over een vreemdgaande architect en zijn zenuwzieke vrouw, en dan uiteindelijk nog een derde vrouw. De synopsis hierboven doet de film totaal geen recht aan; er zit meer complexiteit in de film, maar toch had het allemaal net iets beter kunnen uitgewerkt worden.
168. Black Swan / Darren Aronofsky / 2010 / ***(*)
     A ballet dancer wins the lead in “Swan Lake” and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan – Princess Odette – but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile, the Black Swan.
     Ik heb hem eindelijk geizen, deze Black Swan van Aronofsky, de regisseur die zelfs van wangedrochten met acteurs als Russell Crowe en Mickey Rourke iets deftigs kan maken. Al halen we toch liever The Fountain en Requiem for a Dream aan, in welk rijtje Black Swan zeker past. Een bijzonder opmerkelijke prestatie van Natalie Portman, die de schizofrenie van Nina Sayers op uitmuntende wijze weet te vatten, en erin slaagt ook de kijker het verschil tussen realiteit en fictie te laten verliezen. Bijwijlen doet de film denken aan het betere werk van Brian De Palma.
169. Zombeavers / Jordan Rubin / 2014 / *(*)
     A fun weekend turns into madness and horror for a bunch of groupies looking for fun in a beaver infested swamp.
     Ach, geef toe, met een titel als dit zijt ge toch benieuwd naar wat men van zo’n vehikel brouwt? De rollen zijn helemaal voorspelbaar, de grapjes ook, maar het is min of meer onderhoudend te noemen.
170. Starry Eyes / Kevin Kolsch & Dennis Widmyer / 2014 / **
     A hopeful young starlet uncovers the ominous origins of the Hollywood elite and enters into a deadly agreement in exchange for fame and fortune.
     Dit is al een pak beter dan bovenstaande prent. Er is sprake van een heus scenario (met een over het paard getild einde, maar toch), en er mag al eens wat geacteerd worden. Niet alle prestaties zijn even overtuigend, maar hoofdrolspeelster Alex(andra) Essoe ziet er niet alleen deftig uit (een vereiste voor dergelijke films), maar weet bijzonder overtuigend de verschillende facetten van haar rol over te brengen. Hopelijk krijgt ze de kans om dat ook in anderssoortige films te doen.
171. American Burger / Johan Bromander & Bonita Drake / 2014 / **(*)
     A bus load of American students, all jocks, cheerleaders and nerds, are on a culture trip in Europe when they stumble upon a mysterious Hamburger stand in the deep European woods, selling 100% American Burgers. A visit to the Burger Factory behind the stand, renders them trapped in this unknown territory, and they are about to realize that European notion of American Hamburgers is terrifyingly different from what they’re used to…
     Veel steeren voor zo’n foutscenario, zal u misschien vinden. American Burger is evenwel zo over het paard getiteld dat het niet alleen een satire op het genre, maar ook op zichzelf is geworden. Iedereen die reeds dergelijke films heeft gezien, zal in American Burger alle plotwendingen en overdrijvingen herkennen, en ze zijn hier uitstekend gebracht. Een hilarische film, bij voorkeur te bekijken met een groep vrolijk gelijkgezinden. Debuut voor beide regisseurs, waar we hopelijk nog van gaan horen.
172. The Babadook / Jennifer Kent / 2014 / *
     A single mother, plagued by the violent death of her husband, battles with her son’s fear of a monster lurking in the house, but soon discovers a sinister presence all around her.
     Dit is dan weer veel minder geslaagd. Een pretentieus en overwerkt plot, samenhangend met een bijna constant irriterend gegil van een etterige onhandelbare zoon, overstemmen elke kans die deze prent had kunnen hebben (ik gebruik er zels drie werkwoorden voor).
173. As Above, So Below / John Erick Dowdle / 2014 / *(*)
     When a team of explorers ventures into the catacombs that lie beneath the streets of Paris, they uncover the dark secret that lies within this city of the dead.
     Veel minder pretentieus dan de vorige film, maar niet meteen vernieuwend of verrassend. Gefilmd als ware het amateurbeelden, als valt het in deze wel min of meer te verantwoorden, met een aanvaardbare plot.
174. Bedways / Rolf Peter Kahl / 2010 / 0
     A huge, run-down apartment in Berlin Mitte. Two women and a man, rehearsals for a movie about love and sex, that will never be shot. Acting and reality mingle into a dangerous melange. Berlin is the shelter, love is impossible, flesh is the law.
     Een German arthouse / erotic film dook er ergens bij de google search op, en dat is een toepasselijke omschrijving. Dat arthouse gedeelte toch. De film is een arty-farty pretentieus gedoe vol meta-toestanden over films maken en gefilmd worden en acteren en ondertussen ergens nog iets met sekstoestanden ook. Het is niets mee dan een dganisch saaie en geheel te vermijden bedoening.
175. The Bunny Game / Adam Rehmeier / 2010 / *(*)
     A prostitute looking for her next meal hitches a ride with a trucker that leaves her praying for her next breath.
     Deze film was geheel mijn ding niet, en ik ga hem ook nooit meer bekijken. Het komt over als een gekunsteld totaal van de pot gerukt gegeven, kunst, met de nadruk op dat woord zodat het van niks plots toch iets van waarde maakt. Edoch, het loont beslist de moeite om de achtergrond van de film te onderzoeken. Want hoezeer het ook mijn ding niet is, en hoezeer geflipt deze film ook is, het is eigenlijk nog veel erger dan u dacht. Blijkt namelijk dat veel van de extreme toestanden in deze film ook behoorlijk echt werden uitgevoerd –geheel met toestemming van de hoofdrolspeelster (Rodleen Getsic), tevens cosecenariste– die zich zelfs laat brandmerken om haar performance zo echt mnogelijk te laten lijken. Wie er zich verder in verdiept, zal mogelijks ook tot de conclusie komen dat deze film eigenlijk één geschifte therapiesessie is voor Getsic. De mannelijke tegenspeler is geen professionele acteur, en laat optekenen dat hij geen enkele moeite had zich in zijn rol in te leven, nee hij had eerder moeite om er opnieuw uit te stappen, ook al omdat Getsic zich zeer gewillig liet beslachtofferen en dolenthousiast haar limieten opzocht. Lees ook de interviews bij Rue Morgue en bij NYTimes. Deze film wordt blijkbaar graag vergeleken met À l’intérieur (2007) en Martyrs (2008), maar beide Franse films zijn toch van een ander kaliber (die laatste zijn echt behoorlijke films, en niet een verdoken art performance zoals The Bunny Game). Het meest interessant aan de film zijn de poster en de achtergrondinformatie.
176. Lucy / Luc Besson / 2014 / *(*)
     A woman, accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.
     Maar zo een interessant gegeven, maar zo verkloot door Besson. Waar is de vooruitstrevende Besson van Subway (1985), Le grand bleu (1988), La Femme Nikita (1990), Léon (1994) en zelfs The Fifth Element (1997) gebleven? Of zelfs Les aventures extraordinaires d’Adèle Blanc-Sec (2010). Sinds zijn scenario voor Taxi (1998) is Besson zichzelf eindeloos gaan herhalen met Taxi 2 en 3, The Transporter (de films en de serie), en nu deze Lucy. Het principe is zo interessant, maar dan gaat de man het verknoeien door er een paar Taxi/Transporter slapstick achtervolgingsscènes in te steken, waardoor het verhaal alle geloofwaardigheid verliest. Zo ongelooflijk jammer. Vele pluimen ook voor Scarlett Johansson, die er echt wel in slaagt om de laatste tijd een veelzijdigheid aan rollen neer te zetten (zelfs al zijn ze niet allemaal geslaagd): deze Lucy, Molly in Chef, Samantha in Her, het naamloze hoofdpersonage in Under the Skin, en Barbara in Don Jon. Jaja, en ook Natasha in de Avengers franchise.

     A chance encounter between a disgraced music-business executive and a young singer-songwriter new to Manhattan turns into a promising collaboration between the two talents.
     Ik ben dan maar wat soelaas gaan zoeken in een feelgood romcom, zoals de gekunstelde synergie hier tussen Mark Ruffalo en Keira Knightley.

     An ex-CIA operative is brought back in on a very personal mission and finds himself pitted against his former pupil in a deadly game involving high level CIA officials and the Russian president-elect.
     U hebt deze film al duizend keer gezien. Met een andere titel en regisseur, maar misschien zelfs met Pierce Brosnan in de hoofdrol.

     Struggling with a marriage on the brink of falling apart, a couple escapes for a weekend in pursuit of their better selves, only to discover an unusual dilemma that awaits them.
     Het is het debuut van McDowell, dus we vergeven hem het bizarre scenario en de vele fouten die erin zitten. Volgende keer beter.

     Life changes in an instant for young Mia Hall after a car accident puts her in a coma. During an out-of-body experience, she must decide whether to wake up and live a life far different than she had imagined.The choice is hers if she can go on.
     Ziet eens wat een mooi stationsromanneke. Geheel voorspelbaar en binnen de regels van het genre. Het was van Carrie geleden dat we Chloë Grace Moretz nog eens hadden zien spelen, en dat is jammer, maar ze moet haar rollen misschien ietwat beter kiezen.
181. Predestination / The Spierig Brothers (Michael & Peter) / 2014 / **(*)
     The life of a time-traveling Temporal Agent. On his final assignment, he must pursue the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time.
     Ik ben mijn notities kwijt, maar dit verhaal zat zeer mooi in elkaar. Een schitterende structuur, een afgewerkt verhaal, waarin alles lijkt te kloppen (als ik het mij goed herinner). Het geeft een gans andere invulling aan het concept self-contained. En nu stop ik voor ik alles verklap. Ga dit gerust zien. Het zal u misschien niet bij blijven, maar u zal er graag door verwonderd worden.
182. Super 8 / J.J. Abrams / 2011 / ***
     During the summer of 1979, a group of friends witness a train crash and investigate subsequent unexplained events in their small town.
     Waar wacht u eigenlijk op? Ga dit bekijken, een spannende en ontroerende familiefilm, die veel meer aandacht verdient. Er is inhoud, en is spektakel er is de onschuld van de jeugd en de complexiteit van de volwassenen.
183. Phenomena / Dario Argento / 1985 / ***
     A young girl, with an amazing ability to communicate with insects, is transferred to an exclusive Swiss boarding school, where her unusual capability might help solve a string of murders.
     Het Argentokamp is blijkbaar gemakkelijk in twee te verdelen (zoals bij Brian De Palma), maar dit is alvast één van zijn beste films. Een prille Jennifer Connelly gaat de strijd aan met haar (innerlijke) demonen in deze film gevuld met de bravoure van de jaren 80 –en de kledij om het te bewijzen. Kijken!
184. The Descent / Neil Marshall / 2005 / ***
     A caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.
     Nog meer innerlijke demonen, in deze horrorfilm van Neil Marshall. Alle ingrediënten zijn present, met een hoopvol of fatalistisch einde, afhankelijk of u de Amerikaanse dan wel de unrated versie bekijkt. (Die laatste natuurlijk.) Eén van de betere in het genre.

Er was niet echt tijd voor het filmfestival dit jaar, helaas. Volgend jaar beter, en u laat mij ongetwijfeld wel wete of ik veel gemist heb. Ik heb mijn schade elders ingehaald, en ik heb onder andere dit nog kunnen meepikken.

136. Naked Weapon / Siu-Tung Ching / 2002 / trailer / **
     A mysterious woman, known as Madame M, kidnaps forty pre-teen girls and transports them to a remote island to train them as the most deadly assassins. CIA operative Jack Chen follows the case for 6 years with no leads, but when a series of assassinations begin to occur, Jack suspects that Madame M is back in business.
     Een jeugdzonde van actrice Maggie Q, zou men kunnen stellen, ware het niet dat ze in de Nikita tv-serie eigenlijk net hetzelfde doet als wat ze in deze film doet. Naked Weapon kan zelfs gezien worden als een prequel voor de ganse serie. Ware het niet dat Nikita (2010-2013) gebaseerd is op La femme Nikita (1997-2001), dat dan weer gebaseerd is op de film Nikita van Luc Besson (1990), dat in 1993 een remake kende als Point of No Return ofte The Assassin. Ik zou die versie van 1990 nog wel eens willen terug zien. Edoch: Naked Weapon is een genrefilm over vrouwelijke huurmoordenaars en alle clichés die daar bijhoren. Maggie Q is ondertussen te zien in de nieuwe serie Stalker (samen met Dylan McDermott van American Horror Story).

     Niet goed, neenee. En John Cusack ziet er tegenwoordig blijkbaar uit alsof hij geplastineerd is.

     Having endured his legendary twelve labors, Hercules, the Greek demigod, has his life as a sword-for-hire tested when the King of Thrace and his daughter seek his aid in defeating a tyrannical warlord.
     Een zeer vrije interpretatie rond Hercules, die als grootste verdienste ‘humor’ heeft.

     A Cat in Paris heet eigenlijk Une vie de chat, maar ik heb dus de Engels gedubde versie gezien. Zeer aangename familie(teken)film.
140. Sieben Sommersprossen / Herrmann Zschoche / 1978 / trailer / ***
     Teens in a holiday-camp. First love, first sex, first self-made theatre performance of “Romeo and Julliet” – quite interesting to have a look at the east-German youth in the seventies.
     Een progressieve DDR-film, heletegans onschuldig en naïef, die waarschijnlijk tegenwoordig nooit meer zou kunnen gemaakt worden. Jongeren moeten op een zomerkamp een stukje Romeo en Juliet opvoeren; de hoofdrolspelers worden zelf verliefd, en alles loopt goed af. Verrassend goede acteerprestaties soms, en naar aanleiding daarvan, heb ik de volgende film nog eens van onder het stof gehaald.
141. Romeo And Juliet / Franco Zeffirelli / 1968 / trailer / ****
     Die film dateert al van 1968, maar heeft nog niets aan kwaliteit ingeboet. De onschuldige naïviteit van de 15-jarige Olivia Hussey geeft een onwaarschijnlijke kracht aan het toneelstuk van Shakespeare. Interessant is ook dit Olivia Hussey & Leonard Whiting interview uit 1968. Zeffirelli zou zichzelf nadien proberen te imiteren met Brooke Shields in Endless Love (1981).
142. Drama / Matias Lira / 2010 / trailer / *
     Three theater students, influenced by a professor and French theorist Antonin Artaud’s acting technique, begin to experiment with their own lives, searching for real emotions and situations to bring onto the stage. Their obsession with becoming better actors leads them to their darkest sides, surpassing boundaries that neither they nor their teachers could ever imagine.
     Hoe spontaan-mooi de acteerprestaties van de twee bovenstaande films zijn, zo gekunsteld-armtierig, is het allemaal in Drama.
143. Horns / Alexandre Aja / 2013 / trailer / ***
     In the aftermath of his girlfriend’s mysterious death, a young man awakens to find strange horns sprouting from his temples.
     Daniel Radcliffe is goed bezig, in het post-Potter tijdperk. Hij acteerde uitstekend in de verder niet zo bijster fantastische film Kill Your Darlings, en zet ook in het magisch-realistische Horns een meer dan behoorlijke prestatie neer. De hoorns uit de titel dragen veel bij tot de kwaliteit van de film, en er zitten een paar minder goede momenten in (een soort half-slapstickachtig gedoe), maar deze film blijft onderhoudend van begin tot eind. Misschien komt het toch nog goed met Aja (die u mogelijks kent van Haute Tension / High Tension en Piranha 3D).
144. The Door / Patrick McBrearty / 2014 / trailer / *
     Unemployed and broke, Owen is having a terrible week. It’s not until he saves a wealthy Japanese businessman from a couple of thugs that Owen’s luck begins to change. He’s promised an easy job with very good pay. $500 a night. 5 nights a week. All Owen has to do is wear a uniform, sit in a chair and make sure that an ominous door is never opened. Following an unexpected late night visit, Owen soon finds himself stepping into the darkness, unsure if he will survive the night or escape the fate that waits for him behind The Door.
     De film is eigenlijk zo leeg als de ruimte achter de deur. En dat is niet echt een spoiler.

     Een wraakfilm, die ontaardt in een hallucinant einde. Maar absoluut de trip waard. Abel Ferrara is de regisseur van de oorspronkelijke Bad Lieutenant film uit 1992, ook al met de even mooie als tragische Zoë Lund (gestorven aan overdosis cocaïne in 1999).

     The adventures of Joe and Bunnyman know no limit of bloodlust and carnage. Bodies pile up as Bunnyman indiscriminately slaughters anything that crosses his path in a mutually beneficial relationship that gives Joe plenty of beef jerky to sell in his local store.
     Soms is het zo slecht, dat het bijna goed wordt. Dat is hier niet helemaal het geval. Deze film combineert op zeer succesvolle manier overacting, abiminabele acteerprestaties, een ongeloofwaardig scenario en pseudo-schokerende toestanden. Dit is blijkbaar al de tweede in de reeks en er komt een derde aan. Iedereen zijn hobby!

     A group of friends on a weekend trip to a cabin in the woods find themselves terrorized by alien visitors.
     Huh? Toch een ster voor het min of meer mooi afgewerkte einde.

     Flight 7500 departs Los Angeles International Airport bound for Tokyo. As the overnight flight makes its way over the Pacific Ocean during its ten-hour course, the passengers encounter what appears to be a supernatural force in the cabin.
     Ik moet altijd terugdenken aan The Twilight Zone, als ik zo’n paranormale vliegtuigtoestanden zie. Te hoog gegrepen, helaas.
150. Don’t Blink / Travis Oates / 2014 / trailer / **
     Ten people arrive at a secluded mountain resort to find it completely deserted. With no gas for the return trip, the visitors are forced to stay and investigate the mystery surrounding the abandoned lodge.
     Geslaagde poging, dit debuut van Travis Oates (met Brian Austin Green van Beverly Hills 90210 en Mena Suvari van American Beauty en Joanne Kelly van Warehouse 13). Niet meteen verrassend, maar wel degelijk.

151. In The Realm Of The Senses / Nagisa Ôshima / 1976 / trailer / ***1/2
     Based on a true story set in pre-war Japan, a man and one of his servants begin a torrid affair. Their desire becomes a sexual obsession so strong that to intensify their ardor, they forsake all, even life itself.
     In the Realm of the Senses ofte L’empire des sens oft Ai no korîda –jawel, waarop Quincy Jones zijn gelijknamige hit heeft gebaseerd. Het is onwaarschijnlijk hoe twee mensen zich zo desastreus in elkaar kunnen verliezen. Deze film is bijna veertig jaar oud, en nog steeds sprankelend. Rated R, want in de ongekuiste versie komt er seks voor –een fysieke noodzakelijkheid voor het verhaal.
152. Q / Laurent Bouhnik / 2011 / trailer / *1/2
     In a social context deteriorated by a countrywide economic crisis, the life of several people will be turned upside down after they meet Cecile, a character who symbolizes desire.
     Het zal iets met vrijgevochtenheid van de vrouw te maken hebben, vermoed ik. Het was een ok film, maar ik herinner er mij al niet veel meer van.
153. Alice in Wonderland: An X-Rated Musical Fantasy / Bud Townsend / 1976 / trailer / ***
     A porn musical based on the classic.
     Hilarisch! Hij is ooit drie minuten korter uitgebracht om hem van een X naar een R-rating te brengen, maar de film is nog steeds beschikbaar in ongecensureerde versie. Porno, mja, maar dan de familie-versie, met minstens evenveel aandacht voor het verhaal als voor de sexscènes. In 2007 toerde het verhaal als een Off-Broadway (= te zien in kleine zalen) musical.
154. The Purge: Anarchy / James DeMonaco / 2014 / trailer / 0
     Three groups of people are trying to survive Purge Night, when their stories intertwine and are left stranded in The Purge try to survive the chaos and violence that occurs.
     Die eerste Purge, die had nog wel iets, maar deze wil gewoon tonen dat het concept een franchise kan worden. En er is al een derde onderweg. Te vermijden.
155. Very Good Girls / Naomi Foner / 2013 / trailer / **1/2
     Two New York City girls make a pact to lose their virginity during their first summer out of high school. When they both fall for the same street artist, the friends find their connection tested for the first time.
     Het concept en de synopsis voorspellen niet veel goeds, maar het acteer werk van Dakota Fanning en Elizabeth Olsen (de zus van de tweeling, jawel) tillen dit stukje romantisch drama naar een hoger niveau, en maken er een coming of age verhaal van met een zekere diepgang. Hetzelfde zien we trouwens in de volgende film.

     Deze film had ik vorig jaar al op het filmfestival gezien, en hij overleefde een tweede screening probleemloos.

     A married couple wake up to discover that the sex tape they made the evening before has gone missing, leading to a frantic search for its whereabouts.
     Waarom ook niet, het is een aanvaardbare genrefilm.

As events progress, Aaron’s actions grow increasingly more violent and dangerous and things come to the surface that shows that Tom and Alison are both hiding secrets.
     Pfft. Bijzonder saaie film die mogelijks zal behagen aan al die mensen die bijzonder luid roepen dat ze 50 Shades of Grey slecht vonden.
160. Another Me / Isabel Coixet / 2014 / trailer / *
     A teenager finds her perfect life upended when she’s stalked by a mysterious doppelganger who has her eyes set on assuming her identity.
     Deze film mist focus en slaagt er mede daardoor niet in aan een verwachtingspatroon te voldoen –let wel, dat kan positief zijn, maar niet in dit geval. Ook Sophie ‘Sansa Stark’ Turner slaagt er niet in het rommelige script te doen vergeten.

     A snowstorm forces two people who made an online connection to unwillingly extend their one-night stand.
     Een voorspelbaar concept, inderdaad, maar mooi uitgevoerd, dit debuut van Max Nichols. Ik kan niet op het gezicht van Miles Teller kijken, maar de jongeman heeft recent een aantal zeer mooie vertolkingen neergezet, zoals hier, en in The Spectacular Now. (Uiteraard is er geen enkel probleem om naar Analeigh Tipton te kijken.)
164. White Bird in a Blizzard / Gregg Araki / 2014 / trailer / ***
     In 1988, a teenage girl’s life is thrown into chaos when her mother disappears.
     Het is een verschrikkelijk lelijke affiche, en daarmee is ook het meest negatieve van deze film op tafel gegooid. Sinds The Spectacular Now ben ik een beetje een fan van Shailene Woodley geworden, al maken films zoals Divergent en The Fault in Our Stars het mij wel moeilijk. Ook Eva Green –de meest omhooggevallen actrice van The Dreamers– zet een puike prestatie neer. Ik heb het boek niet gelezen, maar kijk, straks duw ik op het bestelknopje bij amazon, en ik vermoed dat ik ga ontgoocheld worden. De film was alvast zeer de moeite!

     A wheelchair bound photographer spies on his neighbours from his apartment window and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder.
     Eén van de beste films ooit gemaakt.

De terugkeer van de quotering! Vanaf deze maand ziet u opnieuw sterretjes –met een maximum van vier. Een uitzonderlijke vier, zoals ik vorige maand eigenlijk aan Locke had willen geven. Deze maand zit er zo geen bij, maar Edge of Tomorrow en Kynodontas waren beslist de moeite.

(Er zitten wel een paar –even uitzonderlijke– ‘0’-films tussen. Helaas.)

Oktober is dan weer filmfestivalmaand, ik zal mij eens over het programma moeten buigen.

     On holiday in Istanbul Kaisa meets Jacob and she falls head over heels in love. The day after Jakob leaves back home, without Kajsa even knowing his last name. Some time later they meet up again, but Jakob doesn’t remember their fling.
     Hollywood romance in een Finse verpakking. Goed in het genre.
118. Kynodontas / Yorgos Lanthimos / 2009 / ***1/2
     Three teenagers are confined to an isolated country estate that could very well be on another planet. The trio spend their days listening to endless homemade tapes that teach them a whole new vocabulary. Any word that comes from beyond their family abode is instantly assigned a new meaning. Hence ’the sea’ refers to a large armchair and ‘zombies’ are little yellow flowers. Having invented a brother whom they claim to have ostracized for his disobedience, the über-controlling parents terrorize their offspring into submission. The father is the only family member who can leave the manicured lawns of their self-inflicted exile, earning their keep by managing a nearby factory, while the only outsider allowed on the premises is his colleague Christina, who is paid to relieve the son of his male urges. Tired of these dutiful acts of carnality, Christina disturbs the domestic balance.
     Bijzonder bizarre film, die eventueel mooi en rustig kabbelend in beeld is gebracht. Voor de liefhebbers.

     When a college girl who is alone on campus over the Thanksgiving break is targeted by a group of outcasts, she must conquer her deepest fears to outwit them and fight back.
     Slasherfilm met een vrouw in de hoofdrol; mooie fotografie, deftige structuur in het verhaal, en onderhoudend.

     A chef who loses his restaurant job starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family.
     Gezellige feel good familiefilm.
121. X-Men: Days of Future Past / Bryan Singer / 2014 / **1/2
     The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.
     Eerlijk gezegd ben ik een beetje mijn weg kwijt in die X-Men franchise. Ik weet begod niet meer hoeveel films er nu juist zijn, wie waar zit en op welke tijdslijn, maar ik weet wel dat ik telkens weer met plezier naar de films kijk. (Al is dat bij de ene al wat meer dan de andere.) Deze was goed, net niet te ingewikkeld, en met die ene Matrix-geïnspireerde scène, die de film al de moeite van het bekijken maakt.
122. Leprechaun: Origins / Zach Lipovsky / 2014 / *
     Two young couples backpacking through Ireland discover that one of Ireland’s most famous legends is a terrifying reality.
     Ik weet niet goed waarvan deze film de Origins moet voorstellen, maar dit is gewoon een gemiddelde slasher/horror/angstfilm.
123. Coherence / James Ward Byrkit / 2013 / **1/2
     Strange things begin to happen when a group of friends gather for a dinner party on an evening when a comet is passing overhead.
     Hola! Wat voor een trippy filmpje is dat? Een aanzienlijke portie meta, zowel in het verhaal zelf als in de intertekstuele verwijzingen. Ik geef bijvoorbeeld mee dat Nicholas Brendon meespeelt, als een min of meer in de anonimiteit verdwenen acteur die vroeger nochtans in een genredefiniërende serie heeft gespeeld (Brendon speelde Xander Harris in de fenomenale serie Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Zeker geen slechte debuutfilm!

     An officer finds himself caught in a time loop in a war with the alien race. His skills increase as he faces the same brutal combat scenarios, and his union with a Special Forces warrior gets him closer to defeating the enemy.
     Pft. Ik zag die film helemaal niet zitten: weer zo’n flauw gedoe met een halfbakken pseudoheroïsche Cruise. Maar de film boeide mij van bij de eerste iteratie. De regisseur/scenarist is erin geslaagd om op de gepaste momenten voor versnelling te zorgen en om enkel bij de sleutelmomenten stil te blijven staan. Puik!

     A romantic weekend turns horrific and sadistic when Sadie discovers her boyfriend is having an affair with her best friend.
     Dat Billy Zane eigenlijk niet kan acteren, wisten we al langer. AnnaLynne McCord doet gelukkig iets beter haar best, maar als de geloofwaardigheid van het scenario nog verder gaat lijden onder een irrelevante pudeur, tsja… laat maar.

For 10 hours, 10 millionaires from around the world, men and women of fame and power, are transferred to attractive and healthy younger bodies, to live in a world of temporary rejuvenation, in a game of real thrills, where every hour someone must die.
     Ugh. Nog meer slecht acteerwerk en pudeur dan in die film hier boven. Gemiste kans op veel beter, met zo’n intrigerend concept.
127. The Signal / William Eubank / 2014 / **1/2
     On a road trip, Nic and two friends are drawn to an isolated area by a computer genius. When everything suddenly goes dark, Nic regains consciousness – only to find himself in a waking nightmare.
     De minst interessante acteerprestatie komt hier van een weinig verrassende Laurence Fishburne. Bonuspunten dan weer voor Olivia Cooke en Brenton Thwaites. Een beetje een onduidelijk of overdreven einde (en dan heb ik het over de allerlaatste scène, niet over het concept), is wat men deze film eventueel kan verwijten, maar voor de rest is het goed uitgevoerd en boeiend gebracht.
128. Borgman / Alex van Warmerdam / 2013 / **
     A vagrant enters the lives of an arrogant upper-class family, turning their lives into a psychological nightmare in the process.
     Magisch realisme in de film. Het einde is (alweer) iets te bizar, maar voor de rest heb ik deze film heel erg gesmaakt. Een mooie hoofdrol voor een stoïcijnse Jan Bijvoet, die het schip rechthoudt in dit bijzonder bizarre scenario.
129. Honeymoon / Leigh Janiak / 2014 / *1/2
     A newlywed couple finds their lake-country honeymoon descend into chaos after Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of their first night.
     Alsof het nog niet bizar genoeg was, is er ook nog deze Honeymoon, met een boeiende vertolking voor Rose Leslie (Ygritte uit Game of Thrones). Voor de rest is het net iets te gekunsteld geworden, met een vat aan overtollige complexiteit waaruit beter niet was getapt.

     When ambitious young real estate agent Leigh is asked to sell a house with a checkered past, she crosses paths with a disturbed girl whom she learns is the runaway daughter of the couple selling the property.      Alweer te complex voor dit soort film. Weinig boeiend.

     Onschuldige familiefilm, waarbij men (zoals vaak) de impressie heeft dat de cgi van mindere kwaliteit is dan in de eerste film.
133. Transformers: Age of Extinction / Michael Bay / 2014 / 0
     A mechanic and his family join the Autobots as they are targeted by a bounty hunter from another world.
     Langdradig pseudo-epos waarin de regisseur voortdurend lijkt te twijfelen of hij nu een film voor volwassenen of kleuters maakt en uiteindelijk bij een nu reeds uitgemolken franchise uitkomt.
134. The Two Faces of January / Hossein Amini / 2014 / ***
     A thriller centered on a con artist, his wife, and a stranger who flee Athens after one of them is caught up in the death of a private detective.
     Ik ben geen fan van Viggo Mortensen, die hier echter een heel mooie vertolking neerzet. Ik ben wel een fan van Patricia Highsmith (de schrijfster van de Ripley Novels) en van Kirsten Dunst. Ik vond het een mooi uitgewerkte, kwalitatieve film, die vermoedelijk echter niet iedereen zal boeien.
135. Run Like Hell / James Thomas / 2014 / **1/2
     When four friends end up stranded in the small town of Spaulding, one local family offers help. The family’s real motives become terrifyingly obvious, as the couples find themselves fighting for their lives.
     Er zijn van die films die zo over the top zijn, dat ze –waarschijnlijk geheel onbedoeld– eigenlijk goed worden. Dit is zo’n film, met zoveel overacting, en zo’n slecht en voorspelbaar scenario, dat het bijwijlen hilarisch wordt. Ik zou er geen tweede keer naar kijken, maar ik heb er wel van genoten.

     A true story about Frank Abagnale Jr., who, before his 19th birthday, successfully conned millions of dollars’ worth of checks as a Pan Am pilot, doctor, and legal prosecutor.
     Soms moet fictie niet meer doen dan zich op feiten baseren. Dit is een wel zeer onderhoudende film van meneer Spielberg.
106. Noah / Darren Aronofsky / 2014
     A man is chosen by his world’s creator to undertake a momentous mission before an apocalyptic flood cleanses the world.
     Deze (her)interpretatie van het bijbelverhaal door Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Wrestler, The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream), ligt helemaal in de lijn van zijn ander werk, inclusief de kunstmatig gestileerde special effects. Gefundeness fressen voor de fans, zeker bekijkbaar en genietbaar voor de niet ingewijden –tenzij u een radicaal-religieuze beweging bent aangedaan. Maar in dat geval zijn er waarschijnlijk niet veel zaken die u kunnen behagen.
107. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes / Matt Reeves / 2014
     In the wake of a disaster that changed the world, the growing and genetically evolving apes find themselves at a critical point with the human race.
     Bof. Ik vond er niets aan. De eerste (cfr hierboven) was een heel mooie reboot van de franchise, maar dit is niet meer dan een intermezzo terwijl u wacht op een hopelijk veel betere derde versie. De special effects mogen er vanzelfsprekend zijn, maar dit is een platte moraliteit verstopt in een ietwat ongebruikelijke verpakking (aap vs mens is gewoon een allegorie). Nah. Laat die derde maar rap komen?
108. 24 Exposures / Joe Swanberg / 2013
     In this sexy thriller a photographer who specializes in erotic photo shoots is suspected of murder when one of his models is found dead.
     Eigenlijk een interessante premisse, die helaas vergleden is tot een soort soft-pornoachtig gegeven. Had de regisseur wat meer tijd uitgetrokken voor verhaal, dialogen en acteerprestaties, dan had dit een dijk van een film kunnen worden, zonder de gebruikelijke Hollywoodschroom. Dat is het helaas niet geworden.
109. Survivor / John Lyde / 2014
     During their search for a habitable planet the last living humans crash-land on a barren world, inhabited by bloodthirsty aliens and mysterious post-apocalyptic warriors.
     Geheel tegen mijn verwachtingen in, blijkt de structuur van deze film toch te kloppen –al krijgt de scenarist (tevens regisseur en producent) niet meteen punten voor originaliteit. Niettemin is dit geen onaardige independent film, met Kevin ‘Hercules’ Sorbo, en toch wel overtuigende Danielle Chuchran. De fotografie hapert her en der (overexposed whites lijken een trademark), maar toont veel belofte. De film werd gedeeltelijk gefinancierd via een Arrowstorm Kickstarter campagne. Sorbo speelt de voorbije jaren precies in een ganse hoop van die indie-achtige films. Een beetje ongeloofwaardig, maar best onderhoudend, op een pulpige (zoals in pulp fiction, het concept, niet de film) manier.
110. The Grand Budapest Hotel / Wes Anderson / 2014
     The adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous hotel from the fictional Republic of Zubrowka between the first and second World Wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.
     Schoon gemaakte film, zeer te smaken voor mensen die ook al vielen voor die T. S. Spivet-film. Wat betekent dat er hier twee in huis waren die helemaal gek werden. Ik vond hem best te pruimen, een mooi verhaal, met terugkerende dingen, een aangename fotografe en een ongewoon decor. Graag gezien.
111. Godzilla / Gareth Edwards / 2014
     The world’s most famous monster is pitted against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.
     Een pure Hollywoodfilm, ontspanning, sentiment, en wat ander klef gedoe. Voorspelbaar, en zeker niet vernieuwend.
112. The Fault in Our Stars / Josh Boone / 2014
     Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel’s other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group.
     Langverwachte adaptatie van het gelijknamige boek van John Green. Ik was een beetje ontgoocheld, ook al omdat de personages helemaal niet beantwoorden aan wat ik in gedachten had. Dit was beter een boek gebleven.
113. Locke / Steven Knight / 2013
     Ivan Locke, a dedicated family man and successful construction manager, receives a phone call on the eve of the biggest challenge of his career that sets in motion a series of events that threaten his careful cultivated existence.
     Sterke, sterke film. De kijker zet gedurende de ganse film eigenlijk alleen maar één persoon, Ivan Locke, die dan nog in zijn wagen op één of andere Britse snelweg rijdt. De dialogen en het spanningsveld zijn echter van een dergelijke kwaliteit dat de kijker zonder probleem voortdurend in het verhaal wordt binnengezogen. Sterke acteerprestatie van Tom Hardy. Regisseur Steven Knight was ook verantwoordelijk voor het scenario.
114. The Other Woman / Nick Cassavetes / 2014
     After discovering her boyfriend is married, Carly soon meets the wife he’s been betraying. And when yet another love affair is discovered, all three women team up to plot revenge on the three-timing S.O.B.
     Och, laat ons nog eens naar een zoetsappige lachfilm kijken. Eentje waarin de wiebelende boezem van Kate Upton prominent in beeld wordt gebracht. Tegenwoordig is die ook zonder textiel op het internet te vinden, heb ik gehoord. Grappig filmpje, met… wait for it: even weinig om het lijf als Upton.

     Geen barslechte genrefilm.
116. The Great Gatsby / Baz Luhrmann / 2013
     A Midwestern war veteran finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his millionaire neighbor.
     Euh, ik was vergeten dat ik niet zo’n fan ben van de Jean Paul Gaultier-stijl van Baz Luhrmann.

Ik heb eindelijk alle Harry Potter-films gezien. Het was een idee van Henri, die de boeken eerst had opgevreten (waarvan een deel tijdens zijn examens), en nu ook benieuwd was naar de films (ik heb nog steeds niet alle boeken gelezen). Er zit een duidelijke evolutie in de films, niet alleen in de acteerprestaties van de acteurs, maar ook inhoudelijk en vormtechnisch. Het is een goede evolutie voor het grootste deel, maar die laatste film… de afwenteling van de plot is zo kunstmatig: plots wordt alle mysterie in een paar minuten uitgelegd. En ik bedoel: verbaal uitgelegd, het is niet alsof het een deel van de evolutie van het verhaal is, nee: er wordt in een paar zinnen verteld wat er eigenlijk aan de hand is. Ik was zwaar teleurgesteld.

    Het Plamegate verhaal. Ik had de film al gezien, maar het leek me niet slecht om hem ook eens met Henri te bekijken.
83. 300: Rise of an Empire / Noam Murro / 2014
    Greek general Themistokles leads the charge against invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.
    Opvolger van de eerste 300 film uit 2006 (is die film al 8 jaar oud!?), die nu focust op de gebeurtenissen rond de Slag bij Salamis. Verwacht geen historische waarheden (de dichterlijke vrijheid rond de figuur van koningin Artemisia is wel heel groot), maar een min of meer onderhoudend verhaal.

    Rescued from the outrageous neglect of his aunt and uncle, a young boy with a great destiny proves his worth while attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

    Smijt een paar acteurs van Game of Thrones bijeen en maak een film. Helaas wordt die film opgehangen aan een flutverhaal.

    It’s Harry’s third year at Hogwarts; not only does he have a new “Defense Against the Dark Arts” teacher, but there is also trouble brewing. Convicted murderer Sirius Black has escaped the Wizards’ Prison and is coming after Harry.
    Een duidelijk verschil met de andere regisseurs. De acteurs zijn natuurlijk ook al wat ouder ondertussen, maar toch: de reeks wordt er beter op.

    Het zal geleden zijn van 37°2 le matin dat ik nog eens iets had gelezen of gezien van Philippe Djian. Ook deze film ontgoochelt niet, behalve dan dat het voor een abrupt en enigszins absurd en onvoldaan einde zorgt. Voor de rest is het heel mooi geacteerd, en geregisseerd. Maar ik moet dringend 37°2 le matin eens herbekijken.

    A scientist’s drive for artificial intelligence, takes on dangerous implications when his consciousness is uploaded into one such program.
    Onderhoudend, maar het scenario is (inhoudelijk-technisch) zo lek als een zeef. Het is schoon gefilmd nochtans, met een paar leuke effecten.

    Dit is een ondergewaarde film, boordevol humor en kwinkslagen. Toegegeven, ik ben een beetje een fan van Katherine Heigl sinds ze in de remake van Mon père, ce héros aan de zijde van Gérard Depardieu speelde (oorspronkelijk een rol van Marie Gillain). Al heeft ze niet echt een inhoudelijk indrukwekkend palmares, zij was toch de reden waarom ik Grey’s Anatomy nog een beetje draaglijk vond. Killers is een lichtvoetig tijdverdrijf zoals we het graag bekijken.
96. All Cheerleaders Die / Lucky McKee & Chris Sivertson / 2013
    A rebel girl signs up a group of cheerleaders to help her take down the captain of their high school football team, but a supernatural turn of events thrusts the girls into a different battle.
    Een bijzonder lange, trage en saaie inleiding, leidt tot een snelle slasher met de nodige humor. Zet u over het eerste half uur, en het valt nog best mee.
97. Divergent / Neil Burger / 2014
    In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she’s Divergent and won’t fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it’s too late.
    Bof. Ik heb gekeken omdat het met Shailene Woodley is, die zo mooi speelde in The Spectacular Now (en binnenkort te zien is in The Fault in Our Stars). Maar deze film is het bekijken niet waard. Het zit boordevol dystopisch potentieel, dat ondertussen al vele keren beter is verfilmd. Helaas is Divergent een franchise, waardoor er binnenkort nog een pak sequels op ons worden losgelaten (de boeken vormen een trilogie, en het laatste boek wordt over twee filmen opgesplitst). Paul Verhoeven doet zoiets duizenden keren beter –bekijk alstublieft Starship Troopers!

    Members of an elite DEA task force find themselves being taken down one by one after they rob a drug cartel safe house.
    Ex-gouverneur Arnold S. had geld nodig, vermoed ik, te oordelen aan dit inspiratieloze scenario.
99. Expendables 3 / Patrick Hughes / 2014
    Barney and his team, known as “The Expendables”, come into conflict with ruthless arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks, the Expendables’ co-founder, who is determined to destroy the team.
    En dan is er zoiets (i.t.t. Sabotage hierboven dus), dat goed ineen zit, ontspannend en onderhoudend is. Natuurlijk kijkt een mens niet meteen voor het verhaaltje, maar sommige films zijn er gewoon voor de ontspanning, en daar zorgt deze film zeker voor.
100. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 / Marc Webb / 2014
     Peter Parker runs the gauntlet as the mysterious company Oscorp sends up a slew of super villains against him, impacting his life.
     Waarom zijn ze daar in godsnaam mee herbegonnen. Net zoals de voorloper, is dit helemaal een flutfilm.
101. Under the Skin / Jonathan Glazer / 2013
     A mysterious woman seduces lonely men in the evening hours in Scotland. Events lead her to begin a process of self-discovery.
     Scarlett Johansson naakt! En daarmee is het spannendste van deze film verklapt –en u hoeft er hem zelfs niet helemaal voor te bekijken, want het gebeurt al in het begin. Er gebeurt niets in deze film, en de synopsis hierboven is zo voorzichtig om niets van de plot weg te geven. Maar die plot is zo doorzichtig. Er zit vaak interessante fotografie in deze film, maar het vergt moed en tijd om hem helemaal uit te kijken.
102. Appleseed Alpha / Shinji Aramaki / 2014
     Based on the comic book by the creator of Ghost in the Shell, a young female soldier Deunan and her cyborg partner Briareos survive through the post World War 3 apocalyptic New York in search of human’s future hope, the legendary city of Olympus.
     Ik heb destijds het stripverhaal gelezen, maar was totaal niet meer mee met het verhaal. De film viel wel mee, maar het is niet meteen een hoogvlieger. (En ik zat half te slapen op het vliegtuig.)

    Interessant debuut van Begos, met een snuifje Invasion of the Body Snatchers in het verhaal gemixt. De film is onderhoudend, ‘geloofwaardig’, en met een lijnrechte en (dus) voorspelbare plot.

    Ziet, ziet: een wraakfilm. Het blijft een interessant gegeven, maar dit was mogelijks meer voer voor een televisieserie (dan deze toch ietwat halfslachtige film).

    Paul and Camilla’s marriage is in trouble. They head to a picturesque cottage in the South of France to work through their problems and try to inject some love back into their marriage.     Ik heb eigenlijk vooral gekeken omdat het zich afspeelt in de streek van de Dordogne (ik herkende onder meer Monpazier en Saint-Avit-Sénieur). De film is min of meer ok, maar de personages baden in het cliché en de afloop is weinig verrassend. Edoch: helemaal niet slecht voor een langspeelfilmdebuut.
81. Hodejegerne (Headhunters) / Morten Tyldum / 2011
    An accomplished headhunter risks everything to obtain a valuable painting owned by a former mercenary.
    Deze film, gebaseerd op een roman van Jo Nesbø, bevat zeer geslaagde fotografie. De personages worden met een zekere diepgang neergezet, en hoewel het verhaal eerder saai begint, ontwikkelt het zich na een korte tijd tot een snelle en boeiende thriller. Geen hoogvlieger, maar de moeite waard (met een Hollywoodstempel was het gegarandeerd een blockbuster geweest).

Dat zijn plots weer veel films op een maand? Zoudt ge denken?

We hebben sinds eind vorige maand een fitness toestel in huis (een crosstrainer), en ik spendeer daar nogal wat tijd op. Lezen terwijl ge traint, dat gaat mij niet zo goed af (ik heb het herhaaldelijk geprobeerd), maar films en series bekijken… dat is ideaal. (Lang leve iTunes en andere verhuurdinges.)

55. The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet / Jean-Pierre Jeunet / 2013
    A 10-year-old cartographer secretly leaves his family’s ranch in Montana where he lives with his cowboy father and scientist mother and travels across the country on board a freight train to receive an award at the Smithsonian Institute.
56. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty / Ben Stiller / 2013
    A day-dreamer escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker are threatened, he takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.
    Daar heb ik nu eens keihard van genoten. Er kwam veel gezaag van de ‘critici’ naar het schijnt, ten dele omdat het verhaal van James Thurber, waarop het geïnspireerd is, niet zou gerespecteerd zijn. (U leest dat verhaal hier, het is een lange bladzijde leesgenoegen.) Ik vind dat verhaal vooral in het inleidende gedeelte van de film terug, en de rest is een evolutie, een bijna logisch gevolg van de synopsis. Ik kon mij ook totaal vinden in de stelling van fotograaf Sean O’Connell (gespeeld door Sean Penn), die aangaf dat hij soms niet afdrukte (en dus geen foto maakte) omdat hij zo in het moment zelf zat en het niet wou verknoeien door er een foto van te maken.

    Een Top Gun kloon!

    Goedschikse familiefilm, gebaseerd op de memoires van Benjamin Mee (hoofdpersonage uit de film) die een zoo kocht in Devon (UK).
59. Afflicted / Derek Lee & Clif Prowse / 2013
    Two best friends see their trip of a lifetime take a dark turn when one of them is struck by a mysterious affliction. Now, in a foreign land, they race to uncover the source before it consumes him completely.
    Een niet-conventionele vampierenfilm. Dat is de verrassing van deze film. Ik ben geen fan van de found footage (denk in zijn beste vorm aan de Blair Witch film), maar het valt best mee. Met ruimte voor een sequel, tiens.
60. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit / Kenneth Branagh / 2014
    Jack Ryan, as a young covert CIA analyst, uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack.
    Mja. Chris Pine is Harrison Ford niet natuurlijk, en Kenneth Branagh had misschien beter enkel geregisseerd i.p.v. ook geacteerd. In zekere mate onderhoudend, maar ik mis Tom Clancy.
61. Anna / Jorge Dorado / 2013
    A man with the ability to enter peoples’ memories takes on the case of a brilliant, troubled sixteen-year-old girl to determine whether she is a sociopath or a victim of trauma.
    Er zitten een paar leuke plot twists in, maar het wordt allemaal net iets te ingewikkeld gemaakt. Toch onderhoudend, en een mooie prestatie van Taissa ‘American Horror Story’ Farmiga (het zusje van Vera trouwens, van Bates Motel, etc).
62. 3 Days To Kill / McG / 2014
    A dying CIA agent trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter is offered an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment.
    Kevin Costner speelt de hoofdrol (ik had bijna twee d’s in dat woord geplaatst).
63. Robocop / José Padilha / 2014
    In 2028 Detroit, when Alex Murphy – a loving husband, father and good cop – is critically injured in the line of duty, the multinational conglomerate OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer.
    Overbodige remake van het meesterwerk van Verhoeven.
64. Molly Maxwell / Sara St. Onge / 2013

As their student-teacher bond becomes more intimate, she begins putting herself on the line in unexpected ways while pursuing what she wants. But with each awkward, beautiful step towards an impossible romance, Molly risks alienating everyone she loves.
    Ik weet nog altijd niet geheel waarom, maar deze film is ergens blijven plakken. De personages zijn goed uitgewerkt, en hoewel de synopsis het niet laat vermoeden, overstijgt de uitwerking van het gegeven het niveau van de vijfTV-film.
65. Her / Spike Jonze / 2013
    A lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with his newly purchased operating system that’s designed to meet his every need.
    Romantisch dingetje met levenslessen wordt plots een raar science-fiction verhaal. Weird, maar viel best te pruimen. Al zou ik het geen tweede keer bekijken.
66. Brightest Star / Maggie Kiley / 2013
    After the heartbreaking end of his first love, a recent college graduate sets out to win back the girl of his dreams only to discover a greater journey awaits him.
    Een raar liefdesverhaal, waarvoor de regisseur-scenarist misschien net iets te veel uit het eigen leven heeft gepuurd?
67. Not Safe For Work / Joe Johnston / 2014
    An office worker is trapped inside the building where a killer is on the loose.
68. Proxy / Zack Parker / 2013
    The life of three parents who have all shared the loss of a child. Motives are not what they seem and sanity is in short supply in this thriller.
    Mooie muziek, mooie fotografie, en zelfs al zijn de acteerprestaties niet alles, is dit een onderhoudende film. Het potentieel wordt niet geheel ingelost, maar het is bijna beter dan gemiddeld. (4,5/10)
69. sxtape / Bernard Rose / 2013
    Adam and Jill attempt to spice up their relationship by recording a sex tape in an abandoned mansion. Realizing they’re not alone in their ominous surroundings, the couple discover some sex tapes shouldn’t be made as their kinky adventure turns into a desperate fight for survival.
    Saai. Ik heb alleen gekeken omdat het te lastig was om het uit te zetten terwijl ik aan het trainen was.
70. Raze / Josh C. Waller / 2013
    Raze, a horror/action film, focuses on two abducted women & 50 other women who are forced to fight each other using their bare hands.
    Het had potentieel, maar het werd een onuitgewerkt cliché.
71. In the Blood / John Stockwell / 2014
    When her husband goes missing during their Caribbean vacation, a woman sets off on her own to take down the men she thinks are responsible.
    Zelden draait het einde van een film op zo’n grote anticlimax uit. Van de mens van Turistas en Into the Blue.
72. Non-stop / Jaume Collet-Serra / 2014
    An air marshal springs into action during a transatlantic flight after receiving a series of text messages that put his fellow passengers at risk unless the airline transfers $150 million into an off-shore account.
    Onderhoudende cliché-film die alle conventies van het genre respecteert en op de juiste plaats uitvoert: niets nieuws, niets verrassends, maar min of meer deftig uitgevoerd.
73. Oculus / Mike Flanagan / 2013
    A woman tries to exonerate her brother, who was convicted of murder, by proving that the crime was committed by a supernatural phenomenon.
    Trage, maar ergens interessante film, die helaas wat te lang uitgesponnen werd voor de manier waarop hij werd uitgewerkt. De film lijkt voordurend te twijfelen tussen een genrefilm en een vernieuwend gegeven. De full feature film is gebaseerd op een eerdere kortfilm van de regisseur (uit 2006) en ik ben eigenlijk wel benieuwd om die eens te zien.

Rex & Rio-abonnement opgezegd: check.
Let wel: u abonneren, dat gaat rap, opzeggen duur iets langer. Abonneren is een hokje aanvinken in “mijn telenet”, maar opzeggen is niet zo simpel als het hokje afvinken. Een vriendelijke juffrouw (of mogelijks een meneer) belt u, om te vragen waarom ge wilt opzeggen (te weinig kwaliteit, zowel inhoudelijk als technisch), wat in mijn geval ongeveer twee weken duurde. (Deels mijn schuld, omdat ik meestal geen oproepen beantwoord waarvan ik geen nummer te zien krijg.)

Veel minder films gezien dus: joepie!

49. The Machine / Caradog W. James / 2013
    Two artificial intelligence engineers come together as they work to create the first ever self-aware artificial intelligence. A veteran AI engineer secretly hopes to develop technology to help his diseased daughter, even if it means funding comes from the powerful Ministry of Defense (MoD). His new partner, a young woman gifted in the field of AI, is brought on after her breakthroughs are recognized by the MoD. Things go wrong when the MoD takes over and advances the researchers’ work to the next level, teaching the AI to kill and follow MoD instructions with its new and nearly indestructible body.
    Interessante poging, met veel elementen uit andere films en een bijzonder naïeve uitwerking van het gebeuren.
50. Now You See Me / Louis Leterrier / 2013
    An FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money.
    Een fast paced onderhoudende blockbuster, waarbij het enige echt negatieve de ongetwijfelde belofte van een hele reeks sequels is. Ik heb er met heel veel plezier naar gekeken.
51. Enemy / Denis Villeneuve / 2013
    A man seeks out his exact look-alike after spotting him in a movie.
    Gebaseerd op het boek O Homem Duplicado (2002, vert. De man in duplo) van José Saramago. De Engelstalige Wikipedia vertelt mij dat de vertaling van die titel The Duplicated Man is, wat meer aanleunt bij de verwachting. De verfilming is zeer geslaagd, al blijf ik de uitwerking van het Doppelgänger gegeven niet zo goed vinden. En ik begrijp absoluut niet wat die spinnen daarbij komen kijken in de filmversie. (Een betere verfilming dan wat Blindness met De stad der blinden heeft gedaan.)
52. The Legend of Hercules / Renny Harlin / 2014
    The origin story of the the mythical Greek hero. Betrayed by his stepfather, the King, and exiled and sold into slavery because of a forbidden love, Hercules must use his formidable powers to fight his way back to his rightful kingdom.
    Het klopt langs geen kanten, zat Henri voortdurend te prevelen. De cgi was voortreffelijk, maar het verhaal dus niet, en de acteerprestaties zijn ook niet meteen als glorieus te omschrijven.
53. Devil’s Due / Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett / 2014
    After a mysterious, lost night on their honeymoon, a newlywed couple finds themselves dealing with an earlier-than-planned pregnancy.
    Een goede poging, maar ook niet meer. De kijker blijft achter met het gevoel dat hij een interessante inleiding heeft gezien, maar blijft op zijn honger zitten.
54. Vampire Academy / Mark Waters / 2014
    Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, half human-half vampire, a guardian of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discreetly within our world. Her calling is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi.
    Ik weet niet waarom, maar ik heb mij goed geamuseerd met dit leeghoofdig, dolgedraaid gedoe. Misschien omdat het zo over the top is dat het een parodie op zichzelf lijkt?

    When Jane Foster is possessed by a great power, Thor must protect her from a new threat of old times: the Dark Elves.
    Genietbare spektakelfilm, als is het wat verwarrend met die Avengers-film die daar eigenlijk nog tussen hoort.
36. 12 Years a Slave / Steve McQueen / 2013
    In the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.
    Ziet dat nu, de winnaar van de Oscars. Gekeken omdat het van Steve McQueen, de man van het fantastische Shame en van Hunger, films die ook al op die zeer beheerste manier in beeld werden gebracht. Ik kijk verwachtingsvol uit naar zijn volgende film.
37. In Fear / Jeremy Lovering / 2013
    Driving to a music festival in Ireland, a new couple become lost and are then set upon by a tormentor with an unknown motive.
    Te weinig licht, te voorspelbaar, te weinig uitwerking en tegelijktertijd te lang uitgesponnen. De acteerprestaties van Alice Englert zijn wel als deftig te omschrijven.
38. Side Effects / Steven Soderbergh / 2013
    A young woman’s world unravels when a drug prescribed by her psychiatrist has unexpected side effects.
    Dat zien we dan wel weer graag. Hoewel het zeker niet vernieuwend is, zit deze film structureel goed in elkaar, en laat de kijker zich graag meeslepen in de spanningsboog. Soderbergh is een zeer wisselvallige regisseur, maar met deze film heeft hij alvast degelijk werk geleverd.
39. Act of Valor / Mike McCoy (as Mouse McCoy) & Scott Waugh / 2012
    An elite team of Navy SEALs embark on a covert mission to recover a kidnapped CIA agent.
40. Room in Rome / Julio Medem / 2010
    A hotel room in the center of Rome serves as the setting for two young and recently acquainted women to have a physical adventure that touches their very souls.
    Soft porno, dacht ik eerst, maar de film bleek vooral functioneel (jaja) naakt te bevatten en daarnaast interessante dialogen, al bleef de premisse niet ver genoeg uitgewerkt. Wreed spijtig van het slecht Engels. En ik ontdekte pas achteraf dat het een film van Medem betrof, maar in hindsight paste dat perfect in het plaatje. (Medem is de man van Los amantes del Círculo Polar en Lucía y el sexo en La ardilla roja, films die ik dringend eens moet herbekijken.)
41. Grand Piano / Eugenio Mira / 2013
    Moments before his comeback performance, a concert pianist who suffers from stage fright discovers a note written on his music sheet.
    Tegelijkertijd beter én slechter dan ik had verwacht. Een opeenstapeling van clichés, maar het heeft wel iets.
42. Monsters University / Dan Scanlon / 2013
    A look at the relationship between Mike and Sulley during their days at Monsters University — when they weren’t necessarily the best of friends.
43. State of Play / Kevin Macdonald / 2009
    When a congressional aide is killed, a Washington D.C. journalist starts investigating the case involving the congressman, his old college friend.
    Een beetje politiek, een pak onderzoeksjournalistiek en een knappe jonge journaliste in opleiding; romantiek en spanning. Het is het soort films dat ik graag zie. Ondanks Russell Crowe. (Of dank zijn Rachel McAdams.)
44. Veronica Mars / Rob Thomas / 2014
    Years after walking away from her past as a teenage private eye, Veronica Mars gets pulled back to her hometown – just in time for her high school reunion – in order to help her old flame Logan Echolls, who’s embroiled in a murder mystery.
    Ik vermoed dat dit gefundenes fressen is voor de fans van de serie, maar ik had er niet zoveel aan –behalve hier en daar een interessante scene.
45. Here Comes the Devil (Ahí va el diablo) / Adrián García Bogliano / 2012
    A married couple loses their children while on a family trip near some caves in Tijuana. The kids eventually reappear without explanation, but it becomes clear that they are not who they used to be, that something terrifying has changed them.
    Intrigerend en bevat een paar uitstekende plotwendingen, maar het einde getuigt van weinig creativiteit.
46. Assault on Wall Street / Uwe Boll / 2013
    Jim is an average New Yorker living a peaceful life with a well paying job and a loving family. Suddenly, everything changes when the economy crashes causing Jim to lose everything. Filled with anger and rage, Jim snaps and goes to extreme lengths to seek revenge for the life taken from him.
    Zo stel ik mij de mensen voor die commentaren schrijven op HLN en andere internetdinges, als Jim Baxford (gespeeld door Dominic Purcell).

    By day Abby Russell is a dedicated nurse, someone you wouldn’t hesitate to trust your life with. 48. The Slumber Party Massacre / Amy Holden Jones / 1982
    An eighteen-year-old high school girl is left at home by her parents and she decides to have a slumber party. There is friction between some of the invited guests and the new girl, who is better at basketball than they, so the new girl decides to stay at home (which is conveniently across the street from the host’s house). Meanwhile, a murderer of five people with a propensity for power tools has escaped and is at large, and eventually makes his way to the party, where the guests begin experiencing an attrition problem, with only the new girl to help them.
    Onderhoudende vintage slasher.
