Voluit: The Assassination of Richard Nixon, de debuutfilm van Niels Mueller, met Sean Penn (The Falcon and the Snowman, The Game, 21 Grams) en Naomi Watts (Mulholland Dr., The Ring, 21 Grams)
21 Grams is hier geen toeval, want het was Penn die Watts voor de rol van Marie Byck aan Mueller had gesuggereerd. (Je komt nog iets te weten als de regisseur na afloop van de film wat background information komt geven.)
De film is gebasseerd op feiten: in 1974 probeerde Samuel Byck (gespeeld door Sean Penn), een vliegtuig te kapen met de bedoeling het op het White House te laten neerstorten.
Rejected for a government loan from the Small Business Administration, Byck had focused his resentment on Nixon as the figurehead of the U.S. capitalist system and obsessively began to plot his downfall in the most literal terms. In 1974, he hatched a plan he dubbed “Operation Pandora�s Box”, which he outlined on a tape he mailed a few hours before the hijack attempt to Washington Post columnist Jack Anderson: “I will try to get the plane aloft and fly it toward the target area, which will be Washington, D.C. I will shoot the pilot and then in the last few minutes try to steer the plane into the target, which is the White House.” [bron]
Allemaal gemakkelijk in hindsight, maar op het moment van de aanslag was niemand zich bewust van Bycks beweegredenen. Om zijn daden te motiveren had Byck een aantal cassettes ingesproken, die hij had verstuurd naar prominenten zoals Jonas Salk, Senator Abraham Ribicoff en de componist Leonard Bernstein.
Later, na onderzoek door de FBI, werd het ganse ‘plot’ blootgelegd, maar die informatie, zowel de persoon Byck als zijn missie, haalden met moeite het nieuws. Ondertussen waren alle ogen immers op het Watergate schandaal gericht.
Can it get more pessimistic? Penn zet een briljante Byck neer, als een onzeker, embarrassing persoon, die geen grip krijgt op de realiteit. Van obessief belang voor Bick is truth, met verkopers — die in hun verkoopstechnieken de waarheid lichtjes naar hun hand zetten– als grootste antagonisten. Wanneer Richard Nixon als biggest salesman ever wordt afgeschilderd, lijkt de missie voor Byck duidelijk.
The Assassination of Richard Nixon is geen licht verteerbare film, maar Niels Mueller heeft met zijn debuut een pareltje van jewelste afgeleverd.
