Er was niet echt tijd voor het filmfestival dit jaar, helaas. Volgend jaar beter, en u laat mij ongetwijfeld wel wete of ik veel gemist heb. Ik heb mijn schade elders ingehaald, en ik heb onder andere dit nog kunnen meepikken.

136. Naked Weapon / Siu-Tung Ching / 2002 / trailer / **
     A mysterious woman, known as Madame M, kidnaps forty pre-teen girls and transports them to a remote island to train them as the most deadly assassins. CIA operative Jack Chen follows the case for 6 years with no leads, but when a series of assassinations begin to occur, Jack suspects that Madame M is back in business.
     Een jeugdzonde van actrice Maggie Q, zou men kunnen stellen, ware het niet dat ze in de Nikita tv-serie eigenlijk net hetzelfde doet als wat ze in deze film doet. Naked Weapon kan zelfs gezien worden als een prequel voor de ganse serie. Ware het niet dat Nikita (2010-2013) gebaseerd is op La femme Nikita (1997-2001), dat dan weer gebaseerd is op de film Nikita van Luc Besson (1990), dat in 1993 een remake kende als Point of No Return ofte The Assassin. Ik zou die versie van 1990 nog wel eens willen terug zien. Edoch: Naked Weapon is een genrefilm over vrouwelijke huurmoordenaars en alle clichés die daar bijhoren. Maggie Q is ondertussen te zien in de nieuwe serie Stalker (samen met Dylan McDermott van American Horror Story).

     Niet goed, neenee. En John Cusack ziet er tegenwoordig blijkbaar uit alsof hij geplastineerd is.
138. Hercules / Brett Ratner / 2014 / trailer / *
     Having endured his legendary twelve labors, Hercules, the Greek demigod, has his life as a sword-for-hire tested when the King of Thrace and his daughter seek his aid in defeating a tyrannical warlord.
     Een zeer vrije interpretatie rond Hercules, die als grootste verdienste ‘humor’ heeft.

139. A Cat In Paris / Jean-Loup Felicioli & Alain Gagnol / 2010 / trailer / ***1/2
     In Paris, a cat who lives a secret life as a cat burglar’s aide must come to the rescue of Zoe, the little girl he lives with, after she falls into a gangster’s clutches.
     A Cat in Paris heet eigenlijk Une vie de chat, maar ik heb dus de Engels gedubde versie gezien. Zeer aangename familie(teken)film.
140. Sieben Sommersprossen / Herrmann Zschoche / 1978 / trailer / ***
     Teens in a holiday-camp. First love, first sex, first self-made theatre performance of “Romeo and Julliet” – quite interesting to have a look at the east-German youth in the seventies.
     Een progressieve DDR-film, heletegans onschuldig en naïef, die waarschijnlijk tegenwoordig nooit meer zou kunnen gemaakt worden. Jongeren moeten op een zomerkamp een stukje Romeo en Juliet opvoeren; de hoofdrolspelers worden zelf verliefd, en alles loopt goed af. Verrassend goede acteerprestaties soms, en naar aanleiding daarvan, heb ik de volgende film nog eens van onder het stof gehaald.
141. Romeo And Juliet / Franco Zeffirelli / 1968 / trailer / ****
     Die film dateert al van 1968, maar heeft nog niets aan kwaliteit ingeboet. De onschuldige naïviteit van de 15-jarige Olivia Hussey geeft een onwaarschijnlijke kracht aan het toneelstuk van Shakespeare. Interessant is ook dit Olivia Hussey & Leonard Whiting interview uit 1968. Zeffirelli zou zichzelf nadien proberen te imiteren met Brooke Shields in Endless Love (1981).
142. Drama / Matias Lira / 2010 / trailer / *
     Three theater students, influenced by a professor and French theorist Antonin Artaud’s acting technique, begin to experiment with their own lives, searching for real emotions and situations to bring onto the stage. Their obsession with becoming better actors leads them to their darkest sides, surpassing boundaries that neither they nor their teachers could ever imagine.
     Hoe spontaan-mooi de acteerprestaties van de twee bovenstaande films zijn, zo gekunsteld-armtierig, is het allemaal in Drama.
143. Horns / Alexandre Aja / 2013 / trailer / ***
     In the aftermath of his girlfriend’s mysterious death, a young man awakens to find strange horns sprouting from his temples.
     Daniel Radcliffe is goed bezig, in het post-Potter tijdperk. Hij acteerde uitstekend in de verder niet zo bijster fantastische film Kill Your Darlings, en zet ook in het magisch-realistische Horns een meer dan behoorlijke prestatie neer. De hoorns uit de titel dragen veel bij tot de kwaliteit van de film, en er zitten een paar minder goede momenten in (een soort half-slapstickachtig gedoe), maar deze film blijft onderhoudend van begin tot eind. Misschien komt het toch nog goed met Aja (die u mogelijks kent van Haute Tension / High Tension en Piranha 3D).
144. The Door / Patrick McBrearty / 2014 / trailer / *
     Unemployed and broke, Owen is having a terrible week. It’s not until he saves a wealthy Japanese businessman from a couple of thugs that Owen’s luck begins to change. He’s promised an easy job with very good pay. $500 a night. 5 nights a week. All Owen has to do is wear a uniform, sit in a chair and make sure that an ominous door is never opened. Following an unexpected late night visit, Owen soon finds himself stepping into the darkness, unsure if he will survive the night or escape the fate that waits for him behind The Door.
     De film is eigenlijk zo leeg als de ruimte achter de deur. En dat is niet echt een spoiler.

     A shy and mute seamstress goes insane after being attacked and raped twice in one day, in which she takes to the streets of New York after dark and randomly kills men with a .45 caliber gun.
     Een wraakfilm, die ontaardt in een hallucinant einde. Maar absoluut de trip waard. Abel Ferrara is de regisseur van de oorspronkelijke Bad Lieutenant film uit 1992, ook al met de even mooie als tragische Zoë Lund (gestorven aan overdosis cocaïne in 1999).
146. Bloody Homecoming / Brian C. Weed / 2012 / trailer / 0
     Three years after a tragic accident leaves a student dead at the annual Homecoming dance, a group of senior friends anxious about the return of Homecoming Night to their sleepy Southern town find themselves visited by a deadly presence from their past in the dark and desolate halls of their very own high school.
     Ik zocht tevergeefs naar acteerprestaties en enige vorm van originaliteit.
147. The Bunnyman Massacre / Carl Lindbergh / 2014 / trailer / 0
     The adventures of Joe and Bunnyman know no limit of bloodlust and carnage. Bodies pile up as Bunnyman indiscriminately slaughters anything that crosses his path in a mutually beneficial relationship that gives Joe plenty of beef jerky to sell in his local store.
     Soms is het zo slecht, dat het bijna goed wordt. Dat is hier niet helemaal het geval. Deze film combineert op zeer succesvolle manier overacting, abiminabele acteerprestaties, een ongeloofwaardig scenario en pseudo-schokerende toestanden. Dit is blijkbaar al de tweede in de reeks en er komt een derde aan. Iedereen zijn hobby!

     A group of friends on a weekend trip to a cabin in the woods find themselves terrorized by alien visitors.
     Huh? Toch een ster voor het min of meer mooi afgewerkte einde.
149. 7500 / Takashi Shimizu / 2014 / trailer / *
     Flight 7500 departs Los Angeles International Airport bound for Tokyo. As the overnight flight makes its way over the Pacific Ocean during its ten-hour course, the passengers encounter what appears to be a supernatural force in the cabin.
     Ik moet altijd terugdenken aan The Twilight Zone, als ik zo’n paranormale vliegtuigtoestanden zie. Te hoog gegrepen, helaas.
150. Don’t Blink / Travis Oates / 2014 / trailer / **
     Ten people arrive at a secluded mountain resort to find it completely deserted. With no gas for the return trip, the visitors are forced to stay and investigate the mystery surrounding the abandoned lodge.
     Geslaagde poging, dit debuut van Travis Oates (met Brian Austin Green van Beverly Hills 90210 en Mena Suvari van American Beauty en Joanne Kelly van Warehouse 13). Niet meteen verrassend, maar wel degelijk.

151. In The Realm Of The Senses / Nagisa Ôshima / 1976 / trailer / ***1/2
     Based on a true story set in pre-war Japan, a man and one of his servants begin a torrid affair. Their desire becomes a sexual obsession so strong that to intensify their ardor, they forsake all, even life itself.
     In the Realm of the Senses ofte L’empire des sens oft Ai no korîda –jawel, waarop Quincy Jones zijn gelijknamige hit heeft gebaseerd. Het is onwaarschijnlijk hoe twee mensen zich zo desastreus in elkaar kunnen verliezen. Deze film is bijna veertig jaar oud, en nog steeds sprankelend. Rated R, want in de ongekuiste versie komt er seks voor –een fysieke noodzakelijkheid voor het verhaal.
152. Q / Laurent Bouhnik / 2011 / trailer / *1/2
     In a social context deteriorated by a countrywide economic crisis, the life of several people will be turned upside down after they meet Cecile, a character who symbolizes desire.
     Het zal iets met vrijgevochtenheid van de vrouw te maken hebben, vermoed ik. Het was een ok film, maar ik herinner er mij al niet veel meer van.
153. Alice in Wonderland: An X-Rated Musical Fantasy / Bud Townsend / 1976 / trailer / ***
     A porn musical based on the classic.
     Hilarisch! Hij is ooit drie minuten korter uitgebracht om hem van een X naar een R-rating te brengen, maar de film is nog steeds beschikbaar in ongecensureerde versie. Porno, mja, maar dan de familie-versie, met minstens evenveel aandacht voor het verhaal als voor de sexscènes. In 2007 toerde het verhaal als een Off-Broadway (= te zien in kleine zalen) musical.
154. The Purge: Anarchy / James DeMonaco / 2014 / trailer / 0
     Three groups of people are trying to survive Purge Night, when their stories intertwine and are left stranded in The Purge try to survive the chaos and violence that occurs.
     Die eerste Purge, die had nog wel iets, maar deze wil gewoon tonen dat het concept een franchise kan worden. En er is al een derde onderweg. Te vermijden.
155. Very Good Girls / Naomi Foner / 2013 / trailer / **1/2
     Two New York City girls make a pact to lose their virginity during their first summer out of high school. When they both fall for the same street artist, the friends find their connection tested for the first time.
     Het concept en de synopsis voorspellen niet veel goeds, maar het acteer werk van Dakota Fanning en Elizabeth Olsen (de zus van de tweeling, jawel) tillen dit stukje romantisch drama naar een hoger niveau, en maken er een coming of age verhaal van met een zekere diepgang. Hetzelfde zien we trouwens in de volgende film.

     In New York City, a young girl is caught in the middle of her parents’ bitter custody battle.
     Deze film had ik vorig jaar al op het filmfestival gezien, en hij overleefde een tweede screening probleemloos.
157. Sex Tape / Jake Kasdan / 2014 / trailer / *
     A married couple wake up to discover that the sex tape they made the evening before has gone missing, leading to a frantic search for its whereabouts.
     Waarom ook niet, het is een aanvaardbare genrefilm.
158. Autómata / Gabe Ibáñez / 2014 / trailer / *
     Jacq Vaucan is an insurance agent of ROC robotics corporation who investigates cases of robots violating their primary protocols against harming humans. What he discovers will have profound consequences for the future of humanity.
     Bof. Ik ben niet meteen onder de indruk.
159. Deadly Virtues: Love.Honour.Obey. / Ate de Jong / 2014 / trailer / 0
     Tom and Alison are a married couple having sex when Aaron breaks into their house and assaults them. When they come to, Alison is tied up and hung by her arms from the ceiling in the kitchen and Tom is about to be bound by Aaron in the bathroom. As events progress, Aaron’s actions grow increasingly more violent and dangerous and things come to the surface that shows that Tom and Alison are both hiding secrets.
     Pfft. Bijzonder saaie film die mogelijks zal behagen aan al die mensen die bijzonder luid roepen dat ze 50 Shades of Grey slecht vonden.
160. Another Me / Isabel Coixet / 2014 / trailer / *
     A teenager finds her perfect life upended when she’s stalked by a mysterious doppelganger who has her eyes set on assuming her identity.
     Deze film mist focus en slaagt er mede daardoor niet in aan een verwachtingspatroon te voldoen –let wel, dat kan positief zijn, maar niet in dit geval. Ook Sophie ‘Sansa Stark’ Turner slaagt er niet in het rommelige script te doen vergeten.
161. Free Fall / Malek Akkad / 2014 / trailer / *
     When the sudden and shocking death of a coworker sends everyone reeling at Gault Capital, JANE, uncovers a very dangerous secret.      Wat jammer toch, die verschrikkelijk saaie typecasting van Malcolm McDowell. Min of meer onderhoudende pulp.

     Zoveel potentieel, en dat draait dan op zoiets uit.

163. Two Night Stand / Max Nichols / 2014 / trailer / **
     A snowstorm forces two people who made an online connection to unwillingly extend their one-night stand.
     Een voorspelbaar concept, inderdaad, maar mooi uitgevoerd, dit debuut van Max Nichols. Ik kan niet op het gezicht van Miles Teller kijken, maar de jongeman heeft recent een aantal zeer mooie vertolkingen neergezet, zoals hier, en in The Spectacular Now. (Uiteraard is er geen enkel probleem om naar Analeigh Tipton te kijken.)
164. White Bird in a Blizzard / Gregg Araki / 2014 / trailer / ***
     In 1988, a teenage girl’s life is thrown into chaos when her mother disappears.
     Het is een verschrikkelijk lelijke affiche, en daarmee is ook het meest negatieve van deze film op tafel gegooid. Sinds The Spectacular Now ben ik een beetje een fan van Shailene Woodley geworden, al maken films zoals Divergent en The Fault in Our Stars het mij wel moeilijk. Ook Eva Green –de meest omhooggevallen actrice van The Dreamers– zet een puike prestatie neer. Ik heb het boek niet gelezen, maar kijk, straks duw ik op het bestelknopje bij amazon, en ik vermoed dat ik ga ontgoocheld worden. De film was alvast zeer de moeite!

     A wheelchair bound photographer spies on his neighbours from his apartment window and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder.
     Eén van de beste films ooit gemaakt.

De terugkeer van de quotering! Vanaf deze maand ziet u opnieuw sterretjes –met een maximum van vier. Een uitzonderlijke vier, zoals ik vorige maand eigenlijk aan Locke had willen geven. Deze maand zit er zo geen bij, maar Edge of Tomorrow en Kynodontas waren beslist de moeite.

(Er zitten wel een paar –even uitzonderlijke– ‘0’-films tussen. Helaas.)

Oktober is dan weer filmfestivalmaand, ik zal mij eens over het programma moeten buigen.

117. En som deg (Must Have Been Love) / Eirik Svensson / 2012 / **1/2
     On holiday in Istanbul Kaisa meets Jacob and she falls head over heels in love. The day after Jakob leaves back home, without Kajsa even knowing his last name. Some time later they meet up again, but Jakob doesn’t remember their fling.
     Hollywood romance in een Finse verpakking. Goed in het genre.
118. Kynodontas / Yorgos Lanthimos / 2009 / ***1/2
     Three teenagers are confined to an isolated country estate that could very well be on another planet. The trio spend their days listening to endless homemade tapes that teach them a whole new vocabulary. Any word that comes from beyond their family abode is instantly assigned a new meaning. Hence ’the sea’ refers to a large armchair and ‘zombies’ are little yellow flowers. Having invented a brother whom they claim to have ostracized for his disobedience, the über-controlling parents terrorize their offspring into submission. The father is the only family member who can leave the manicured lawns of their self-inflicted exile, earning their keep by managing a nearby factory, while the only outsider allowed on the premises is his colleague Christina, who is paid to relieve the son of his male urges. Tired of these dutiful acts of carnality, Christina disturbs the domestic balance.
     Bijzonder bizarre film, die eventueel mooi en rustig kabbelend in beeld is gebracht. Voor de liefhebbers.

     When a college girl who is alone on campus over the Thanksgiving break is targeted by a group of outcasts, she must conquer her deepest fears to outwit them and fight back.
     Slasherfilm met een vrouw in de hoofdrol; mooie fotografie, deftige structuur in het verhaal, en onderhoudend.
120. Chef / Jon Favreau / 2014 / **1/2
     A chef who loses his restaurant job starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family.
     Gezellige feel good familiefilm.
121. X-Men: Days of Future Past / Bryan Singer / 2014 / **1/2
     The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.
     Eerlijk gezegd ben ik een beetje mijn weg kwijt in die X-Men franchise. Ik weet begod niet meer hoeveel films er nu juist zijn, wie waar zit en op welke tijdslijn, maar ik weet wel dat ik telkens weer met plezier naar de films kijk. (Al is dat bij de ene al wat meer dan de andere.) Deze was goed, net niet te ingewikkeld, en met die ene Matrix-geïnspireerde scène, die de film al de moeite van het bekijken maakt.
122. Leprechaun: Origins / Zach Lipovsky / 2014 / *
     Two young couples backpacking through Ireland discover that one of Ireland’s most famous legends is a terrifying reality.
     Ik weet niet goed waarvan deze film de Origins moet voorstellen, maar dit is gewoon een gemiddelde slasher/horror/angstfilm.
123. Coherence / James Ward Byrkit / 2013 / **1/2
     Strange things begin to happen when a group of friends gather for a dinner party on an evening when a comet is passing overhead.
     Hola! Wat voor een trippy filmpje is dat? Een aanzienlijke portie meta, zowel in het verhaal zelf als in de intertekstuele verwijzingen. Ik geef bijvoorbeeld mee dat Nicholas Brendon meespeelt, als een min of meer in de anonimiteit verdwenen acteur die vroeger nochtans in een genredefiniërende serie heeft gespeeld (Brendon speelde Xander Harris in de fenomenale serie Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Zeker geen slechte debuutfilm!
124. Edge of Tomorrow / Doug Liman / 2014 / ***1/2
     An officer finds himself caught in a time loop in a war with the alien race. His skills increase as he faces the same brutal combat scenarios, and his union with a Special Forces warrior gets him closer to defeating the enemy.
     Pft. Ik zag die film helemaal niet zitten: weer zo’n flauw gedoe met een halfbakken pseudoheroïsche Cruise. Maar de film boeide mij van bij de eerste iteratie. De regisseur/scenarist is erin geslaagd om op de gepaste momenten voor versnelling te zorgen en om enkel bij de sleutelmomenten stil te blijven staan. Puik!
125. Scorned / Mark Jones / 2013 / 0
     A romantic weekend turns horrific and sadistic when Sadie discovers her boyfriend is having an affair with her best friend.
     Dat Billy Zane eigenlijk niet kan acteren, wisten we al langer. AnnaLynne McCord doet gelukkig iets beter haar best, maar als de geloofwaardigheid van het scenario nog verder gaat lijden onder een irrelevante pudeur, tsja… laat maar.
126. Real Playing Game / Tino Navarro & David Rebordão / 2013 / 0
     In a future not too far away, Steve Battier, an elderly, terminally ill multi-millionaire, accepts the offer of a company – RPG – that in exchange for a high monetary sum, provides a very select group of clientèle the chance to be young again. For 10 hours, 10 millionaires from around the world, men and women of fame and power, are transferred to attractive and healthy younger bodies, to live in a world of temporary rejuvenation, in a game of real thrills, where every hour someone must die.
     Ugh. Nog meer slecht acteerwerk en pudeur dan in die film hier boven. Gemiste kans op veel beter, met zo’n intrigerend concept.
127. The Signal / William Eubank / 2014 / **1/2
     On a road trip, Nic and two friends are drawn to an isolated area by a computer genius. When everything suddenly goes dark, Nic regains consciousness – only to find himself in a waking nightmare.
     De minst interessante acteerprestatie komt hier van een weinig verrassende Laurence Fishburne. Bonuspunten dan weer voor Olivia Cooke en Brenton Thwaites. Een beetje een onduidelijk of overdreven einde (en dan heb ik het over de allerlaatste scène, niet over het concept), is wat men deze film eventueel kan verwijten, maar voor de rest is het goed uitgevoerd en boeiend gebracht.
128. Borgman / Alex van Warmerdam / 2013 / **
     A vagrant enters the lives of an arrogant upper-class family, turning their lives into a psychological nightmare in the process.
     Magisch realisme in de film. Het einde is (alweer) iets te bizar, maar voor de rest heb ik deze film heel erg gesmaakt. Een mooie hoofdrol voor een stoïcijnse Jan Bijvoet, die het schip rechthoudt in dit bijzonder bizarre scenario.
129. Honeymoon / Leigh Janiak / 2014 / *1/2
     A newlywed couple finds their lake-country honeymoon descend into chaos after Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of their first night.
     Alsof het nog niet bizar genoeg was, is er ook nog deze Honeymoon, met een boeiende vertolking voor Rose Leslie (Ygritte uit Game of Thrones). Voor de rest is het net iets te gekunsteld geworden, met een vat aan overtollige complexiteit waaruit beter niet was getapt.
130. At the Devil’s Door / Nicholas McCarthy / 2014 / *
     When ambitious young real estate agent Leigh is asked to sell a house with a checkered past, she crosses paths with a disturbed girl whom she learns is the runaway daughter of the couple selling the property. When Leigh tries to intervene and help her, she becomes entangled with a supernatural force that soon pulls Leigh’s artist sister Vera into its web – and has sinister plans for both of them.
     Alweer te complex voor dit soort film. Weinig boeiend.

132. How to Train Your Dragon 2 / Dean DeBlois / 2014 / **1/2
     When Hiccup and Toothless discover an ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace.
     Onschuldige familiefilm, waarbij men (zoals vaak) de impressie heeft dat de cgi van mindere kwaliteit is dan in de eerste film.
133. Transformers: Age of Extinction / Michael Bay / 2014 / 0
     A mechanic and his family join the Autobots as they are targeted by a bounty hunter from another world.
     Langdradig pseudo-epos waarin de regisseur voortdurend lijkt te twijfelen of hij nu een film voor volwassenen of kleuters maakt en uiteindelijk bij een nu reeds uitgemolken franchise uitkomt.
134. The Two Faces of January / Hossein Amini / 2014 / ***
     A thriller centered on a con artist, his wife, and a stranger who flee Athens after one of them is caught up in the death of a private detective.
     Ik ben geen fan van Viggo Mortensen, die hier echter een heel mooie vertolking neerzet. Ik ben wel een fan van Patricia Highsmith (de schrijfster van de Ripley Novels) en van Kirsten Dunst. Ik vond het een mooi uitgewerkte, kwalitatieve film, die vermoedelijk echter niet iedereen zal boeien.
135. Run Like Hell / James Thomas / 2014 / **1/2
     When four friends end up stranded in the small town of Spaulding, one local family offers help. The family’s real motives become terrifyingly obvious, as the couples find themselves fighting for their lives.
     Er zijn van die films die zo over the top zijn, dat ze –waarschijnlijk geheel onbedoeld– eigenlijk goed worden. Dit is zo’n film, met zoveel overacting, en zo’n slecht en voorspelbaar scenario, dat het bijwijlen hilarisch wordt. Ik zou er geen tweede keer naar kijken, maar ik heb er wel van genoten.

     Soms moet fictie niet meer doen dan zich op feiten baseren. Dit is een wel zeer onderhoudende film van meneer Spielberg.
106. Noah / Darren Aronofsky / 2014
     A man is chosen by his world’s creator to undertake a momentous mission before an apocalyptic flood cleanses the world.
     Deze (her)interpretatie van het bijbelverhaal door Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Wrestler, The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream), ligt helemaal in de lijn van zijn ander werk, inclusief de kunstmatig gestileerde special effects. Gefundeness fressen voor de fans, zeker bekijkbaar en genietbaar voor de niet ingewijden –tenzij u een radicaal-religieuze beweging bent aangedaan. Maar in dat geval zijn er waarschijnlijk niet veel zaken die u kunnen behagen.
107. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes / Matt Reeves / 2014
     In the wake of a disaster that changed the world, the growing and genetically evolving apes find themselves at a critical point with the human race.
     Bof. Ik vond er niets aan. De eerste (cfr hierboven) was een heel mooie reboot van de franchise, maar dit is niet meer dan een intermezzo terwijl u wacht op een hopelijk veel betere derde versie. De special effects mogen er vanzelfsprekend zijn, maar dit is een platte moraliteit verstopt in een ietwat ongebruikelijke verpakking (aap vs mens is gewoon een allegorie). Nah. Laat die derde maar rap komen?
108. 24 Exposures / Joe Swanberg / 2013
     In this sexy thriller a photographer who specializes in erotic photo shoots is suspected of murder when one of his models is found dead.
     Eigenlijk een interessante premisse, die helaas vergleden is tot een soort soft-pornoachtig gegeven. Had de regisseur wat meer tijd uitgetrokken voor verhaal, dialogen en acteerprestaties, dan had dit een dijk van een film kunnen worden, zonder de gebruikelijke Hollywoodschroom. Dat is het helaas niet geworden.
109. Survivor / John Lyde / 2014
     During their search for a habitable planet the last living humans crash-land on a barren world, inhabited by bloodthirsty aliens and mysterious post-apocalyptic warriors.
     Geheel tegen mijn verwachtingen in, blijkt de structuur van deze film toch te kloppen –al krijgt de scenarist (tevens regisseur en producent) niet meteen punten voor originaliteit. Niettemin is dit geen onaardige independent film, met Kevin ‘Hercules’ Sorbo, en toch wel overtuigende Danielle Chuchran. De fotografie hapert her en der (overexposed whites lijken een trademark), maar toont veel belofte. De film werd gedeeltelijk gefinancierd via een Arrowstorm Kickstarter campagne. Sorbo speelt de voorbije jaren precies in een ganse hoop van die indie-achtige films. Een beetje ongeloofwaardig, maar best onderhoudend, op een pulpige (zoals in pulp fiction, het concept, niet de film) manier.

     The adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous hotel from the fictional Republic of Zubrowka between the first and second World Wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.
     Schoon gemaakte film, zeer te smaken voor mensen die ook al vielen voor die T. S. Spivet-film. Wat betekent dat er hier twee in huis waren die helemaal gek werden. Ik vond hem best te pruimen, een mooi verhaal, met terugkerende dingen, een aangename fotografe en een ongewoon decor. Graag gezien.

     The world’s most famous monster is pitted against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.
     Een pure Hollywoodfilm, ontspanning, sentiment, en wat ander klef gedoe. Voorspelbaar, en zeker niet vernieuwend.
112. The Fault in Our Stars / Josh Boone / 2014
     Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel’s other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group.
     Langverwachte adaptatie van het gelijknamige boek van John Green. Ik was een beetje ontgoocheld, ook al omdat de personages helemaal niet beantwoorden aan wat ik in gedachten had. Dit was beter een boek gebleven.
113. Locke / Steven Knight / 2013
     Ivan Locke, a dedicated family man and successful construction manager, receives a phone call on the eve of the biggest challenge of his career that sets in motion a series of events that threaten his careful cultivated existence.
     Sterke, sterke film. De kijker zet gedurende de ganse film eigenlijk alleen maar één persoon, Ivan Locke, die dan nog in zijn wagen op één of andere Britse snelweg rijdt. De dialogen en het spanningsveld zijn echter van een dergelijke kwaliteit dat de kijker zonder probleem voortdurend in het verhaal wordt binnengezogen. Sterke acteerprestatie van Tom Hardy. Regisseur Steven Knight was ook verantwoordelijk voor het scenario.
114. The Other Woman / Nick Cassavetes / 2014
     After discovering her boyfriend is married, Carly soon meets the wife he’s been betraying. And when yet another love affair is discovered, all three women team up to plot revenge on the three-timing S.O.B.
     Och, laat ons nog eens naar een zoetsappige lachfilm kijken. Eentje waarin de wiebelende boezem van Kate Upton prominent in beeld wordt gebracht. Tegenwoordig is die ook zonder textiel op het internet te vinden, heb ik gehoord. Grappig filmpje, met… wait for it: even weinig om het lijf als Upton.

     Geen barslechte genrefilm.
116. The Great Gatsby / Baz Luhrmann / 2013

     Euh, ik was vergeten dat ik niet zo’n fan ben van de Jean Paul Gaultier-stijl van Baz Luhrmann.

Ik heb eindelijk alle Harry Potter-films gezien. Het was een idee van Henri, die de boeken eerst had opgevreten (waarvan een deel tijdens zijn examens), en nu ook benieuwd was naar de films (ik heb nog steeds niet alle boeken gelezen). Er zit een duidelijke evolutie in de films, niet alleen in de acteerprestaties van de acteurs, maar ook inhoudelijk en vormtechnisch. Het is een goede evolutie voor het grootste deel, maar die laatste film… de afwenteling van de plot is zo kunstmatig: plots wordt alle mysterie in een paar minuten uitgelegd. En ik bedoel: verbaal uitgelegd, het is niet alsof het een deel van de evolutie van het verhaal is, nee: er wordt in een paar zinnen verteld wat er eigenlijk aan de hand is. Ik was zwaar teleurgesteld.

    Het Plamegate verhaal. Ik had de film al gezien, maar het leek me niet slecht om hem ook eens met Henri te bekijken.

    Opvolger van de eerste 300 film uit 2006 (is die film al 8 jaar oud!?), die nu focust op de gebeurtenissen rond de Slag bij Salamis. Verwacht geen historische waarheden (de dichterlijke vrijheid rond de figuur van koningin Artemisia is wel heel groot), maar een min of meer onderhoudend verhaal.

    Smijt een paar acteurs van Game of Thrones bijeen en maak een film. Helaas wordt die film opgehangen aan een flutverhaal.

    Een duidelijk verschil met de andere regisseurs. De acteurs zijn natuurlijk ook al wat ouder ondertussen, maar toch: de reeks wordt er beter op.

    Het zal geleden zijn van 37°2 le matin dat ik nog eens iets had gelezen of gezien van Philippe Djian. Ook deze film ontgoochelt niet, behalve dan dat het voor een abrupt en enigszins absurd en onvoldaan einde zorgt. Voor de rest is het heel mooi geacteerd, en geregisseerd. Maar ik moet dringend 37°2 le matin eens herbekijken.

    Onderhoudend, maar het scenario is (inhoudelijk-technisch) zo lek als een zeef. Het is schoon gefilmd nochtans, met een paar leuke effecten.

    Dit is een ondergewaarde film, boordevol humor en kwinkslagen. Toegegeven, ik ben een beetje een fan van Katherine Heigl sinds ze in de remake van Mon père, ce héros aan de zijde van Gérard Depardieu speelde (oorspronkelijk een rol van Marie Gillain). Al heeft ze niet echt een inhoudelijk indrukwekkend palmares, zij was toch de reden waarom ik Grey’s Anatomy nog een beetje draaglijk vond. Killers is een lichtvoetig tijdverdrijf zoals we het graag bekijken.
96. All Cheerleaders Die / Lucky McKee & Chris Sivertson / 2013
    A rebel girl signs up a group of cheerleaders to help her take down the captain of their high school football team, but a supernatural turn of events thrusts the girls into a different battle.
    Een bijzonder lange, trage en saaie inleiding, leidt tot een snelle slasher met de nodige humor. Zet u over het eerste half uur, en het valt nog best mee.
97. Divergent / Neil Burger / 2014
    In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she’s Divergent and won’t fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it’s too late.
    Bof. Ik heb gekeken omdat het met Shailene Woodley is, die zo mooi speelde in The Spectacular Now (en binnenkort te zien is in The Fault in Our Stars). Maar deze film is het bekijken niet waard. Het zit boordevol dystopisch potentieel, dat ondertussen al vele keren beter is verfilmd. Helaas is Divergent een franchise, waardoor er binnenkort nog een pak sequels op ons worden losgelaten (de boeken vormen een trilogie, en het laatste boek wordt over twee filmen opgesplitst). Paul Verhoeven doet zoiets duizenden keren beter –bekijk alstublieft Starship Troopers!

    Ex-gouverneur Arnold S. had geld nodig, vermoed ik, te oordelen aan dit inspiratieloze scenario.
99. Expendables 3 / Patrick Hughes / 2014
    Barney and his team, known as “The Expendables”, come into conflict with ruthless arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks, the Expendables’ co-founder, who is determined to destroy the team.
    En dan is er zoiets (i.t.t. Sabotage hierboven dus), dat goed ineen zit, ontspannend en onderhoudend is. Natuurlijk kijkt een mens niet meteen voor het verhaaltje, maar sommige films zijn er gewoon voor de ontspanning, en daar zorgt deze film zeker voor.

     Peter Parker runs the gauntlet as the mysterious company Oscorp sends up a slew of super villains against him, impacting his life.
     Waarom zijn ze daar in godsnaam mee herbegonnen. Net zoals de voorloper, is dit helemaal een flutfilm.
101. Under the Skin / Jonathan Glazer / 2013
     A mysterious woman seduces lonely men in the evening hours in Scotland. Events lead her to begin a process of self-discovery.
     Scarlett Johansson naakt! En daarmee is het spannendste van deze film verklapt –en u hoeft er hem zelfs niet helemaal voor te bekijken, want het gebeurt al in het begin. Er gebeurt niets in deze film, en de synopsis hierboven is zo voorzichtig om niets van de plot weg te geven. Maar die plot is zo doorzichtig. Er zit vaak interessante fotografie in deze film, maar het vergt moed en tijd om hem helemaal uit te kijken.
102. Appleseed Alpha / Shinji Aramaki / 2014
     Based on the comic book by the creator of Ghost in the Shell, a young female soldier Deunan and her cyborg partner Briareos survive through the post World War 3 apocalyptic New York in search of human’s future hope, the legendary city of Olympus.
     Ik heb destijds het stripverhaal gelezen, maar was totaal niet meer mee met het verhaal. De film viel wel mee, maar het is niet meteen een hoogvlieger. (En ik zat half te slapen op het vliegtuig.)

    Interessant debuut van Begos, met een snuifje Invasion of the Body Snatchers in het verhaal gemixt. De film is onderhoudend, ‘geloofwaardig’, en met een lijnrechte en (dus) voorspelbare plot.

    Ziet, ziet: een wraakfilm. Het blijft een interessant gegeven, maar dit was mogelijks meer voer voor een televisieserie (dan deze toch ietwat halfslachtige film).
80. Fossil / Alex Walker / 2014
    Paul and Camilla’s marriage is in trouble. They head to a picturesque cottage in the South of France to work through their problems and try to inject some love back into their marriage. As their relationship unravels, the holiday is hijacked by an American and his French girlfriend. Looking for an excuse to pause the hostilities, Camilla invites them to stay at the cottage. The new dynamic brings with it a new and improved mood, but as sexual tensions rise and competition between the four of them increases, they spiral towards a horrific event that will change all of their lives forever.
    Ik heb eigenlijk vooral gekeken omdat het zich afspeelt in de streek van de Dordogne (ik herkende onder meer Monpazier en Saint-Avit-Sénieur). De film is min of meer ok, maar de personages baden in het cliché en de afloop is weinig verrassend. Edoch: helemaal niet slecht voor een langspeelfilmdebuut.
81. Hodejegerne (Headhunters) / Morten Tyldum / 2011
    An accomplished headhunter risks everything to obtain a valuable painting owned by a former mercenary.
    Deze film, gebaseerd op een roman van Jo Nesbø, bevat zeer geslaagde fotografie. De personages worden met een zekere diepgang neergezet, en hoewel het verhaal eerder saai begint, ontwikkelt het zich na een korte tijd tot een snelle en boeiende thriller. Geen hoogvlieger, maar de moeite waard (met een Hollywoodstempel was het gegarandeerd een blockbuster geweest).

Dat zijn plots weer veel films op een maand? Zoudt ge denken?

We hebben sinds eind vorige maand een fitness toestel in huis (een crosstrainer), en ik spendeer daar nogal wat tijd op. Lezen terwijl ge traint, dat gaat mij niet zo goed af (ik heb het herhaaldelijk geprobeerd), maar films en series bekijken… dat is ideaal. (Lang leve iTunes en andere verhuurdinges.)

When his job along with that of his co-worker are threatened, he takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.
    Daar heb ik nu eens keihard van genoten. Er kwam veel gezaag van de ‘critici’ naar het schijnt, ten dele omdat het verhaal van James Thurber, waarop het geïnspireerd is, niet zou gerespecteerd zijn. (U leest dat verhaal hier, het is een lange bladzijde leesgenoegen.) Ik vind dat verhaal vooral in het inleidende gedeelte van de film terug, en de rest is een evolutie, een bijna logisch gevolg van de synopsis. Ik kon mij ook totaal vinden in de stelling van fotograaf Sean O’Connell (gespeeld door Sean Penn), die aangaf dat hij soms niet afdrukte (en dus geen foto maakte) omdat hij zo in het moment zelf zat en het niet wou verknoeien door er een foto van te maken.

    Two best friends see their trip of a lifetime take a dark turn when one of them is struck by a mysterious affliction. Now, in a foreign land, they race to uncover the source before it consumes him completely.
    Een niet-conventionele vampierenfilm. Dat is de verrassing van deze film. Ik ben geen fan van de found footage (denk in zijn beste vorm aan de Blair Witch film), maar het valt best mee. Met ruimte voor een sequel, tiens.
60. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit / Kenneth Branagh / 2014
    Jack Ryan, as a young covert CIA analyst, uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack.
    Mja. Chris Pine is Harrison Ford niet natuurlijk, en Kenneth Branagh had misschien beter enkel geregisseerd i.p.v. ook geacteerd. In zekere mate onderhoudend, maar ik mis Tom Clancy.

    A man with the ability to enter peoples’ memories takes on the case of a brilliant, troubled sixteen-year-old girl to determine whether she is a sociopath or a victim of trauma.
    Er zitten een paar leuke plot twists in, maar het wordt allemaal net iets te ingewikkeld gemaakt. Toch onderhoudend, en een mooie prestatie van Taissa ‘American Horror Story’ Farmiga (het zusje van Vera trouwens, van Bates Motel, etc).

    A dying CIA agent trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter is offered an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment.
    Kevin Costner speelt de hoofdrol (ik had bijna twee d’s in dat woord geplaatst).

    Ik weet nog altijd niet geheel waarom, maar deze film is ergens blijven plakken. De personages zijn goed uitgewerkt, en hoewel de synopsis het niet laat vermoeden, overstijgt de uitwerking van het gegeven het niveau van de vijfTV-film.

    Romantisch dingetje met levenslessen wordt plots een raar science-fiction verhaal. Weird, maar viel best te pruimen. Al zou ik het geen tweede keer bekijken.

    Een raar liefdesverhaal, waarvoor de regisseur-scenarist misschien net iets te veel uit het eigen leven heeft gepuurd?

    An office worker is trapped inside the building where a killer is on the loose.
68. Proxy / Zack Parker / 2013
    The life of three parents who have all shared the loss of a child. Motives are not what they seem and sanity is in short supply in this thriller.
    Mooie muziek, mooie fotografie, en zelfs al zijn de acteerprestaties niet alles, is dit een onderhoudende film. Het potentieel wordt niet geheel ingelost, maar het is bijna beter dan gemiddeld. (4,5/10)

    Adam and Jill attempt to spice up their relationship by recording a sex tape in an abandoned mansion. Realizing they’re not alone in their ominous surroundings, the couple discover some sex tapes shouldn’t be made as their kinky adventure turns into a desperate fight for survival.
    Saai. Ik heb alleen gekeken omdat het te lastig was om het uit te zetten terwijl ik aan het trainen was.
70. Raze / Josh C. Waller / 2013
    Raze, a horror/action film, focuses on two abducted women & 50 other women who are forced to fight each other using their bare hands.
    Het had potentieel, maar het werd een onuitgewerkt cliché.
71. In the Blood / John Stockwell / 2014
    When her husband goes missing during their Caribbean vacation, a woman sets off on her own to take down the men she thinks are responsible.
    Zelden draait het einde van een film op zo’n grote anticlimax uit. Van de mens van Turistas en Into the Blue.
72. Non-stop / Jaume Collet-Serra / 2014
    An air marshal springs into action during a transatlantic flight after receiving a series of text messages that put his fellow passengers at risk unless the airline transfers $150 million into an off-shore account.
    Onderhoudende cliché-film die alle conventies van het genre respecteert en op de juiste plaats uitvoert: niets nieuws, niets verrassends, maar min of meer deftig uitgevoerd.
73. Oculus / Mike Flanagan / 2013
    A woman tries to exonerate her brother, who was convicted of murder, by proving that the crime was committed by a supernatural phenomenon.
    Trage, maar ergens interessante film, die helaas wat te lang uitgesponnen werd voor de manier waarop hij werd uitgewerkt. De film lijkt voordurend te twijfelen tussen een genrefilm en een vernieuwend gegeven. De full feature film is gebaseerd op een eerdere kortfilm van de regisseur (uit 2006) en ik ben eigenlijk wel benieuwd om die eens te zien.

Rex & Rio-abonnement opgezegd: check.
Let wel: u abonneren, dat gaat rap, opzeggen duur iets langer. Abonneren is een hokje aanvinken in “mijn telenet”, maar opzeggen is niet zo simpel als het hokje afvinken. Een vriendelijke juffrouw (of mogelijks een meneer) belt u, om te vragen waarom ge wilt opzeggen (te weinig kwaliteit, zowel inhoudelijk als technisch), wat in mijn geval ongeveer twee weken duurde. (Deels mijn schuld, omdat ik meestal geen oproepen beantwoord waarvan ik geen nummer te zien krijg.)

Veel minder films gezien dus: joepie!

49. The Machine / Caradog W. James / 2013
    Two artificial intelligence engineers come together as they work to create the first ever self-aware artificial intelligence. A veteran AI engineer secretly hopes to develop technology to help his diseased daughter, even if it means funding comes from the powerful Ministry of Defense (MoD). His new partner, a young woman gifted in the field of AI, is brought on after her breakthroughs are recognized by the MoD. Things go wrong when the MoD takes over and advances the researchers’ work to the next level, teaching the AI to kill and follow MoD instructions with its new and nearly indestructible body.
    Interessante poging, met veel elementen uit andere films en een bijzonder naïeve uitwerking van het gebeuren.
50. Now You See Me / Louis Leterrier / 2013
    An FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money.
    Een fast paced onderhoudende blockbuster, waarbij het enige echt negatieve de ongetwijfelde belofte van een hele reeks sequels is. Ik heb er met heel veel plezier naar gekeken.
51. Enemy / Denis Villeneuve / 2013
    A man seeks out his exact look-alike after spotting him in a movie.
    Gebaseerd op het boek O Homem Duplicado (2002, vert. De man in duplo) van José Saramago. De Engelstalige Wikipedia vertelt mij dat de vertaling van die titel The Duplicated Man is, wat meer aanleunt bij de verwachting. De verfilming is zeer geslaagd, al blijf ik de uitwerking van het Doppelgänger gegeven niet zo goed vinden. En ik begrijp absoluut niet wat die spinnen daarbij komen kijken in de filmversie. (Een betere verfilming dan wat Blindness met De stad der blinden heeft gedaan.)
52. The Legend of Hercules / Renny Harlin / 2014
    The origin story of the the mythical Greek hero. Betrayed by his stepfather, the King, and exiled and sold into slavery because of a forbidden love, Hercules must use his formidable powers to fight his way back to his rightful kingdom.
    Het klopt langs geen kanten, zat Henri voortdurend te prevelen. De cgi was voortreffelijk, maar het verhaal dus niet, en de acteerprestaties zijn ook niet meteen als glorieus te omschrijven.
53. Devil’s Due / Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett / 2014
    After a mysterious, lost night on their honeymoon, a newlywed couple finds themselves dealing with an earlier-than-planned pregnancy.
    Een goede poging, maar ook niet meer. De kijker blijft achter met het gevoel dat hij een interessante inleiding heeft gezien, maar blijft op zijn honger zitten.
54. Vampire Academy / Mark Waters / 2014
    Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, half human-half vampire, a guardian of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discreetly within our world. Her calling is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi.
    Ik weet niet waarom, maar ik heb mij goed geamuseerd met dit leeghoofdig, dolgedraaid gedoe. Misschien omdat het zo over the top is dat het een parodie op zichzelf lijkt?
