Hm. Hoeveel versies van de Cello Suites heb ik ondertussen. Eens kijken: de eerste die ik zelf gekocht heb, is de lichtjes legendarische opname van Rostropovitch uit 1995; ik heb ook de erm ‘interpretaties’ van Yo-Yo Ma uit 1997 (die er eerlijkheidshalve ‘inspired by Bach’ bij heeft gezet); de versie van Pieter Wispelwey uit 1998; die van Paolo Pandolfo op viola da gamba uit 2000; en de heruitgave van Janos Starker op Mercury Living Presence uit 2004 (oorspronkelijk 1963-1965). En nu komt daar die bij van Jean-Guihen Queyras uit 2007. Ik word dat niet beu, die cello suites. Enfin, ik word Bach in zijn geheel eigenlijk niet makkelijk beu.
In de rest van het lijstje heb ik mij wat laten inspireren door Alex Ross (The Best Classical Music Recordings of 2011 in The New Yorker & Apex 2011 op zijn blog, The Rest is Noise).
Een bijzonder aangename ontdekking is Appalachia / The Song of the High Hills van Frederic Delius (arr. T. Beecham) door Andrew Davis en het BBC Symphony Orchestra & Chorus. Heletegans Far West zonder de gebruikelijke clichés. Ik wil daar nog wel meer van beluisteren.
